They were the parents of Peter Henry, Annie Abella Henrietta, Willie Theodore, Christian, LeRoy Carl, Alfred E. and Alma E., twins, and Irene Catharina Louisa. Carroll Daily Herald - Saturday, September 18, 1937 - West Side — When two people have lived together long enough to observe their 50th or golden wedding anniversary, it is indeed worthy of comment, but to enjoy 13 additional years of married life, is rare indeed. This privilege will come to Mr. and Mrs. C.H. Dohse when they will observe their 63rd wedding anniversary on Sunday, Sept. 19. Mr. Dohse, who is 84 years old and Mrs. Dohse, who is 85 years old, enjoy good health. Mr. Dohse keeps busy with a large garden and the care of a large lawn and Mrs. Dohse devotes her spare time from her house work, in making beautiful crocheting, quilting and fine needle work. Mr. and Mrs. Dohse have spent the greater share of their life in and around West Side. Mr. Dohse was born in 1853, at Schleswig, Holstein, Germany. He received his education in Germany. When 19 years of age, he came with his parents to Clinton county, Iowa. Mrs. Dohse was born in Davenport, Iowa, Sept. 8, 1852. She met Mr. Dohse in Eastern Iowa and they were married at Charlotte, Ia., in 1874. by Justice Allbright. They made their home in Charlotte for four years before coming to this community in 1880 and settling down on a farm in Carroll county just two miles northeast of West Side. Here they lived for 34 years and were numbered among the successful farmers of this community. They retired from the farm in 1914 and moved to their present home in West Side where they have lived for the past 23 years. Eight children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Dohse. One daughter, Alma, died at the age of two and on son, Christie, died at the age of five during an epidemic of diphtheria. The others are: Henry Dohse, Leroy Dohse, Will T. Dohse and Etta (Mrs. A.G. Schoenjahn), all of West Side, Alfred of Denison and Irene (Mrs. Gus Benning), of Holstein. There are 12 grandchildren, Perry Schoenjahn, Reed, Clayton and Anita Dohse of West Side, Mrs. Grace Bonner of Denver, Colo., Lorene Dohse of Denison, Mrs. Anton Sorenson of Storm Lake, Mrs. Peter Sabus and Mrs. Irving Prince of Carroll, Phyllis, Gladys, and Russell Benning of Holstein and six great-grandchildren: Grace May, Carol Ann, and Kay Margaret Prince, Larry and Marian Sabus of Carroll and Annette Schoenjahn of West Side. On Sunday the members of the family have planned a surprise for Mr. and Mrs. Dohse. A dinner at noon will be prepared by members of the family and brought to the Dohse home. Open house will be observed during the afternoon and Mr. and Mrs. Dohse expect to greet many old friends who come to offer congratulations and best wishes. Mrs. Dohse's sister, Mrs. Eggert Sievers, of West Side, as well as the children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and other relatives will be present. Contributed by pMcP - Christian H. Dohse, a native of Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, was the only child of Heinrich Nickolos and Anna (Sievers) Dohse, also born in the fatherland, the former in Holstein and the latter in Schleswig. The father, hearing from his son Christian of the opportunities offered in the new world, brought his wife to America in 1870, locating first in Clinton, IA. A harness maker and tanner by trade, he followed those occupations in Clinton until 1882, when he came to Carroll county, and here he and his wife made their home with their son until their death. Both were laid to rest in West Side cemetery. Christian came to the United States in 1869. The land had not yet been broken when he started farming and stock-raising in Arcadia, Carroll County. In 1874, Mr. Dohse was united in marriage to Miss Carrie Lamp, and had eight children. Since coming to the area, Mr. Dohse has acted on the school board of the West Side Independent school for 18 successive years and during ten years of that time was president of the board. Not only has he been a stalwart champion of the cause of education but has cast the weight of his influence on the side of all those measures which pertain also to the material and moral development of the community.
