Description	:	Christian Rempfer, 56, was born September 7, 1874, in New Berasina, (Kloestitz, Bessarabia), South Russia, a son of Christoph and Elizabeth Rempfer. He was baptized and confirmed in the Evangelical Lutheran church by Rev. Shrenk. In the spring of 1894 he came to the United States and stayed in the vicinity of what is now Parkston, South Dakota for about six months. He resided... Read More	Christian Rempfer, 56, was born September 7, 1874, in New Berasina, (Kloestitz, Bessarabia), South Russia, a son of Christoph and Elizabeth Rempfer. He was baptized and confirmed in the Evangelical Lutheran church by Rev. Shrenk. In the spring of 1894 he came to the United States and stayed in the vicinity of what is now Parkston, South Dakota for about six months. He then came to Eureka, South Dakota where he stayed from the fall of 1894 until the fall of 1895. From there he came to his present home which is located 5 miles northeast of Merricourt. He resided here until his death. On November 14, 1897, he married to Katharina Gebhardt. To this union fourteen chiludedren were born; one of whom died in infancy. He was a founder and organizer of St. Paul’s Lutheran church at Monago, and was a prominent figure in the building of the two churches and the parsonage. In 1925 he took a trip to the Fatherland to see his old friends and acquaintances once more. He was taken to an Aberdeen hospital on September 28, 1930; however, his illness did not improve and he died of septicemia on Thursday, November 13, 1930, at noon. Funeral services were held at St. Paul’s Lutheran church three miles west of Monago. Rev. J. E. Timian officiate. Pallbearers were John F., George, and Fred Gebhardt; John and Karl Fiechther and John Fempfer; all nephews of Mr. Rempfer. Burial was in the church cemetery. Survivors include his wife, Katharina Rempfer, six daughters, Mrs. Gottlieb Speidel (Emma); Mrs. Fred Speidel (Marie); Mrs. Emil Speidel (Katharina); Pauline; Elizabeth and Bertha; seven sons, Christian; John; Carl; Gottlieb; Paul; William; and Jacob; one sister, Maria Gienger in Germany; one brother, Christoph in Russia; one step-brother, Fred Rempfer of Monago; nine grandchildren and other relatives. 20 Nov. 1930, Kulm Messenger, courtesy of the American Historical Society of Germans from Russia.
