The original spelling, found on German records and signatures on early land transactions in the United States, was OTTENI. The spellings used today in the U.S. are: OTTENI, OATNEY, OTNEY, and OTTNEY. All trace back to Urloffen, Germany to Hans Georg Otteni. Most of Benedicts's direct descendants now spell the name OATNEY. ________________________________________________ Per the 1850 U.S. Census, Christina and Benedict resided in Pleasant Township, Fairfield, County, Ohio. Listed are: -Benedict Otney, age 60, born Germany -Christina Otney, age 60, born Germany -John Otney, age 16, born Ohio -Louisa Otney, age 14, born Ohio -Emily Otney, age 19, born Atlantic Ocean -Andrew Otney, age 23, born Ohio It is speculated Christina died between 1850 and 1854. This is based upon her appearance on the 1850 U.S. Census, her non-appearance on Benedict's 1854 acquisition of the 81 acres, and Benedict's later remarriage on 2 May 1858 to Barbara Drenckley in Lancaster, Fairfield County, Ohio. It is believed that Christina is buried at Elmwood Cemetery in Lancaster, Ohio. According to a great great grandson of Benedict and Christina, Paul Oatney Shugert, a tombstone stood at the corner of Lawrence Street and Mt. Pleasant Avenue in Elmwood Cemetery. The stone was inscribed in German and no one in the family could read it. Paul remembered the stone being knocked down by cars and destroyed. Unfortunately, all cemetery records for Elmwood were kept in a tool shed which was later destroyed by fire.
