The family settled in New York state, where they lived a few years, then moved to Washington Co., Iowa where her father, Gotlieb Blankenhorn, became one of the pioneer farmers of Iowa. She was one of nine children. At the age of 18 years she was married at Letts, Washington Co., Iowa, to John Fink, a young farmer of that neighborhood, where they resided for a few years. Hearing of the fine farming land to be acquired in Kansas by homesteading, the young couple were filled with zeal to try their luck at pioneering in Kansas. So in the spring of 1871, with their two babies and a colony of neighbors, each anxious to obtain a new home on the plains, they made the long journey over unbridged streams to Kansas, the Fink family taking a homestead on the north fork of the Solomon River, a few miles west of what is now Downs. Through industrious labor & careful planning they were able to acquire a number of good farms in Osborne County, where they reared their 11 children, making a fine Christian home for them, and where their influence was for the good in the community. Later on, turning the work of farms over to the older sons, the rest of the family moved to Downs, mainly for better educational and religious advantages, where Mrs. Fink affiliated herself and family with the Methodist church. Mother Fink was a great lover of her church and attended it very faithfully as long as she was physically able, and when she could no longer go to church she surrounded herself with her Bible and books of sermons and religious writings, some of them in German. She departed this life on Sunday, 7 Feb 1937, being 86 years, one month and 25 days old. Two of her sons, W.F. Fink & Chas Fink and 2 of her daughters, Rosa Fink Watson and Lizzie Fink Lattin, preceded her in death, and her husband, John Fink, who died on the 9th day of January, 1914. She is survived by 7 of her children: Henry, Frank and Clarence Fink, and Lillie Kimble of Downs, Kansas; Albert Fink, of Kirwin, Ks; Floyd and David of Osborne, Ks, together with 35 grandchildren & 35 great-grandchildren, 3 brothers, David, Charles and Michael Blankenhorn, of Iowa, and 3 sisters, to in Iowa and on in Canada. She has made her home the last few years with her son, Clarence, and his wife, who have lovingly cared for her and together with the thoughtful kindness of her other children and grandchildren have made her last years comfortable and happy.
