Kay Aughtry, 88, wife of the late Howard Aughtry, lifelong resident of Lyman and recently of Life Care Center in North Charleston, died peacefully surrounded by her family on Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2007. Born in Pendleton on July 26, 1919, the daughter of Oscar and Hattie Kay, she and her husband resided in Lyman for 74 years. Christine graduated from Duncan High School, and along with her identical twin, Kathleen (Humphries), worked for more than 35 years at the Lyman Remnant Store. She was active in the Lyman Methodist Church and was a den mother for the local Boy Scouts. She was also an extraordinary "Southern cook." Mrs. Aughtry was married for 69 years to her "one and only love," Howard, who died in 2005. She was predeceased by her twin, Kathleen Kay Humphries of Lyman, as well as three brothers and an older sister. Mrs. Aughtry is survived by her son, Barry and his wife, Gay, of Simpsonville and her two grandsons, Nicholas of Wrightsville Beach, N.C., and Andrew of Greenville. She is also survived by her daughter, Kathleen Aughtry Randall and her, husband, Bob of Summerville and her granddaughter, Aughtry Eloise Randall "Audie" of Clemson. In addition, she is also survived by a special nephew, Edward Humphries and his wife, Kay, of Lyman, as well as five other nephews. Graveside services will be held on Saturday, Sept. 1, at 11 a.m. in the Wood Memorial Park in Duncan. The family will receive friends at the home of Edward and Kay Humphries of 412 Old Spartanburg Highway, Lyman, and following the service at the gravesite. The family is at the residence of Barry and Gay Aughtry, 103 Holly Tree Lane, Simpsonville. Memorials may be made to Lyman Methodist Church Building Fund, 65 Groce Road, Lyman, SC 29365. The family would also like to thank the staff and caretakers of Life Care Center and Palmetto Hospice for their gentle and loving care during these last two years.
