We were with him from November 16 until his death. Those five weeks have forever changed our ideas of life in a "Big City" and coldness of the people who live in them. We were treated with such kindness and loving compassion by everyone we came in contact with. We have brought home with us the warmest of feelings for your city. The Visiting Nurses and Hospice of San Francisco were our primary contact and they kindly and gently guided us through the sad, distressing and often terrifying states of our son's illness and eventual death. They stood by us and encouraged us and taught us to do things for Chris' care that we never thought we would be able to do. They enabled us to grant our son's last wish, to die at home in his own room, in his own bed with his family and friends beside him. They have our eternal gratitude. Chris lived the last 20 years of his life in San Francisco and truly loved everything about this city. Most of our visits, prior to his illness, were here in Kansas when he would come home for the holidays, reunions, or family affairs. We didn't really know his friends in California. When Chris became ill we were immediately gathered in by these friends and made part of a "new family". His father and I spent two weeks in March with him and his older brother and sister visited in June and his younger brother and wife visited in September, and during these visits we began to see why Chris loved San Francisco so much. Although we were strangers in a strange place, under sad and frightening circumstances, we were made to feel welcome, comfortable and above all, cared for. Few of his friends are native Californians, they come from all over. So I am left wondering if only the nicest people naturally migrate to San Francisco or if once there something changes them into these incredible people. Maybe something in your air or water, do you think? One of Chris' greatest pleasures was his morning coffee and reading his Chronicle and woe to anyone who messed with his paper before he was finished with it. We wanted you to know that there are at least two people in Kansas whose lives will never be the same because of our five weeks in your city. We love you, San Francisco.
