Read More	Head trauma led to climber's death Billings Gazette, Billings, MT January 10, 2001 A Billings man who fell while ice-climbing south of Red Lodge on Dec. 23 died of head trauma, according to the Carbon County sheriff's office. Christopher Allen, 30, was pronounced dead at St. Vincent Healthcare after being evacuated from a drainage on the rugged slope where he fell. According to rescue officials, Allen and his climbing partner were walking on a "relatively flat piece of ice" when Allen fell and slid down the ice about 100 feet. He was not wearing a climbing helmet, according to rescuers. Allen's climbing partner, Jonathan Graeve, provided first aid before hurrying down the mountain for help. By driving down the canyon Graeve was able to get cell phone service and call rescue authorities. He then returned to the trailhead to guide the rescuers who had to carry Allen off the mountain in a litter before he could be transferred to the hospital's helicopter. The rescue took about four hours. Brian Kessner, a lieutenant with the sheriff's office, was one of the first to arrive at the accident scene. "We started down the rock slide with seven of us," he said. "Just about at the end of the rock slide the rest of the search and rescue came. Thank God for that because we were about spent by then. People were slipping and sliding." The accident occurred at what ice climbers call Rock Creek Falls. The falls are visible from Beartooth Highway 212. Ice climbers park at the turnoff to the Parkside Campground, then walk about 150 yards down the highway toward Red Lodge before hiking southeast. The uphill trail to the falls ranges from 4 feet wide to as narrow as 2 feet before breaking out of the trees at the base of towering tan limestone cliffs and spires and a steep rock slide. The trail climbs about 1,500 vertical feet from the highway. The waterfall is formed by a small stream that drains off the Line Creek Plateau. The unnamed stream is a tributary to Rock Creek. According to veteran ice climber Pete Shelley of Red Lodge, the waterfall is broken up by climbers into two sections. The lower falls has about a 25-degree pitch and is rated about a 2 for difficulty. The 85-foot-high upper falls has about a 70-degree pitch and is rated about a 4. A 5 rating is considered dead vertical, straight up. "Other people have fallen on this waterfall," Shelley said. The victim was identified as Christopher Allen. He was pronounced dead Saturday at St. Vincent Healthcare, shortly after arriving in Billings on the HELP helicopter. The accident happened as Allen and another man, whose name wasn't available Sunday, were walking to the place where they intended to climb a frozen waterfall, said Tom Kuntz, incident commander for Carbon County Search and Rescue. Both men "evidently were experienced climbers," Kuntz said. "They were hiking on a relatively flat piece of ice when he fell and slid down the ice about 100 feet." The slide was partly horizontal and partly vertical distance, Kuntz said. The injured man wasn't wearing a helmet, but he hadn't actually started his climb, Kuntz noted. The injured man's climbing partner provided first aid before hiking out for help. He telephoned the Carbon County Sheriff's Department about 11 a.m., Kuntz said. Fifteen volunteers answered the emergency call Saturday morning, Kuntz said. They included volunteers from Carbon and Stillwater counties' search and rescue units, the U.S. Forest Service, Red Lodge Mountain and Red Lodge Ambulance Service. The accident site was about a 75-minute hike from Highway 212 about 10 miles south of Red Lodge. Rescuers hiked in from about 150 yards from the turnoff to the Parksides Campground. When Stephen Carrington, a Carbon County Search and Rescue volunteer in Belfry, arrived at the scene, Allen's hiking partner and two emergency medical technicians from Red Lodge Ambulance Service had already begun hiking in to the victim. Carrington and other volunteers walked more than an hour – all uphill. They reached the injured man just as his climbing partner, and the two EMTs finished stabilizing him for transport. The man was breathing on his own, but not conscious, as the team of volunteers carried him back down the trail. At two points, the rescuers used ropes to carefully lower the victim on the litter because of the steep trail. They got him back to the highway just before 4 p.m. "It was very fast progress for the terrain," Kuntz said. The Red Lodge ambulance was waiting. The helicopter ambulance landed on the highway within minutes and took Allen to Billings.
