For the first time in his life, he did not respond with a lecture, but instead turned to his wife, Priscilla, and asked, "How do I conclude?" In reflecting upon his life, Web simply stated, "It was a good ride." Two days later, on Aug. 1, 2006, his life on earth reached its conclusion, and Web died peacefully with his family by his side. Web was born at home on Sept. 19, 1928, in Sentinel Butte, N.D., the fourth of eight children of Rose and Webster E. Allen. Growing up on the family farm, Web was nicknamed "Tiny," a smaller version of his father, Web. As he grew older, and bigger, however, his dad had to shorten this to "Tine," a name more fitting for a seasoned farmer and ranch hand. Although his mother died when he was 7, and a year later his family home burned to the ground, Web continued to maintain a positive attitude throughout his life. This positive attitude became one of his defining characteristics, along with his honesty, hard work ethic, and sense of humor. Web served his country in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. Returning home, he attended the Dakota Business College and then began work with Cardinal Drilling Company in Bismarck, N.D. Here, he met the love of his life, Priscilla Ketterling, who was an accountant in a nearby office. She fit every requirement on his "future wife" list, and within a month he proposed. They were married 18 months later, on Sept. 14, 1957, and began their 49 years together. Within four years, they were blessed with their first two children, Pam and Mark. Ten years later, they would be blessed with another son, Chris. In 1962, Web moved the family when Cardinal Drilling opened its offices in Billings. Here, they adopted grandparents, Max and Elma Anderson, and the family of Bette and Bill Woodland and their six children. Web continued to work in the oil business for many years, until he retired and became a permanent fixture at his grandchildren's ballgames and activities. Web was very special to his grandchildren. From him, they learned the importance of honesty, a hard day's work, and a good meal. Time spent with Grandpa provided many life lessons - whether it was the practice of good citizenship or simply avoiding semis while on the interstate ("you never know when their tires are going to just pop off"). Grandpa will also be remembered for his generous heart, creative spirit and humble way of life. Grandpa, you were a wonderful role model, we are grateful for everything you shared, and we will miss you dearly. Web was preceded in death by his son, Chris Allen; his parents, Rose and Webster E. Allen of Sentinel Butte; his infant brother, Roman Allen; his brothers, Carl Allen of Beach, N.D., and Kenneth Allen of Miles City; and his lifetime friends and family, Bette and Bill Woodland of Billings. He is survived by his bride, Priscilla; his daughter, Pam Allenheringer and her husband Mike Heringer; his son, Mark Allen; his son Chris' wife, Alisia Allen; his 10 grandchildren: Jessica, Daniel, Michael, McLaine, and Jordan Heringer, Sarah and Zachary Allen, and Ross, Brennan, and Isabella Allen; his sister, Barbara Allen Linn of Washington; his brothers, Henry and Donald of North Dakota, and Melvin Allen of Washington; his mother-in-law, Hulda Ketterling of North Dakota; and his "adopted" children and their families: Stephanie Woodland and Sandy D'ewart of Utah, Karen Cook of Colorado, Bill and Greg Woodland of Washington, and Mikki Ivie of New York. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Boys & Girls Club and the Montana Rescue Mission. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 7, at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in Billings, with internment in the Holy Cross Cemetery in Billings.
