Burial will be held at a later date in the Sacred Heart Cemetery, Early, Iowa. Born on November 26, 1919 in Sioux Rapids, Iowa, Russ was the son of Claire R., Sr. and Ruth (Johnson) Latta. His family moved to Sac City, Iowa, where he lived until he graduated from Sac City High School in 1937 at the age of 17. Russ attended Nebraska State College for two years, then transferred to the University of Iowa. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corp. on December 31, 1941, shortly after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Russ trained and worked as an airplane mechanic in Northern Africa, Burma and India. He was later trained as a tail gunner for the A-26 bomber for the Japan theater, but fortunately was never deployed. Russ was honorably discharged as a Sergeant on November 9, 1945. He was united in marriage to Charlotte Reis on September 5, 1947 at St. Ambrose Rectory in Des Moines, Iowa. Russ continued his education at Nebraska State Teacher’s College, earning a Bachelor of Art degree on January 21, 1949. He began his teaching career in 1949 at the Arthur Independent School where he taught English Literature and History, and coached boys’ and girls’ basketball. Russ studied during the summers at Drake University for his Secondary School Principal Certificate and credits towards his Master’s Degree. He graduated from State College of Iowa (now UNI) in 1964 with a Master of Arts in Education. In 1953, Russ began as Principal and English Teacher at Corwith High School. Russ then taught 8th grade science at Central Junior High School in Ames, beginning in 1960 until his retirement in 1983. While teaching in Ames, Russ passed the written and oral exams for Doctor of Philosophy Degree at Iowa State University. He treasured being a part of the Central family and enjoyed meeting his fellow retired teachers for coffee weekly. Russ worked part-time at the ISU health service until Charlotte retired. For many years, they ran a concession stand at the old ISU football stadium. Russ and Charlotte especially enjoyed the years during which five of their grandchildren attended Iowa State. They were avid ISU fans and for several years held season tickets for ISU home basketball games. Traveling was one of Russ’ favorite activities. Throughout his teaching career, the family would vacation in different directions every summer. Russ traveled extensively during his service years as well, including Jerusalem, Israel twice. After retirement, Russ and Charlotte “chaperoned” Chris, Jackie and grandkids on their yearly summer vacations across the United States. They also enjoyed spending their winter months in Apache Junction, AZ for many years. Russ was a lifelong scholar and educator, who loved literature, poetry and reading. He was proud to have studied at all four major universities in Iowa. Russ enjoyed his hobby of researching stocks and investing in the market, providing him an excuse for his frequent trips to one of his favorite places, the public library. When at home, the financial news network was a constant companion for Russ and Charlotte. He stayed in contact with many of his high school classmates and fellow air corpsman over the span of their lifetime. Russ was a faithful member of Saint Cecilia Catholic Church for 60 years. We are thankful God blessed us with 100 years to know and love this man. Russ is survived by his wife Charlotte; children: Michael Claire (JoAnn) Latta of Fort Dodge and Jaqueline Latta (Wayne) Fullenkamp of West Des Moines; grandchildren: Matthew (Sherri) McKenna of Kansas City, MO, Ryan (Sarah) McKenna of Kansas City, MO, Mark (Dana) McKenna of Ankeny, Patrick (Jackie) McKenna of Urbandale, Anthony Latta of Cedar Falls, Claire Latta of Fort Dodge, Andrew (Amy) Fullenkamp of Minneapolis, MN, Allison Fullenkamp of Durham, NC, and Kevin Fullenkamp of Tampa, FL; 13 great-grandchildren; a brother, Paul (Sally) Latta of West Des Moines; and two nieces, Cathy (Eric) Jorgensen and Mary (Mike) Thilges. He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter and son in law, Christine Theresa and Michael McKenna. Obituary and photo published by Adams Funeral Home, Ames, Iowa.
