March 7, 1955 - Carroll Daily Times - Funeral services for Mrs. F.H. Cooney, wife of Judge Cooney, will be at 2:30 Wednesday afternoon at Trinity Episcopal Church. The Rev. Charles B. Members of the American Legion Auxiliary will attend the rites in a group.
Mrs. Cooney, 67, died of a coronary disease and hypertension at her home, 820 North Adams Street, at 1 o'clock Sunday afternoon. She had been in ill health several years, her condition becoming worse in late November, 1954. Judge and Mrs. Cooney had returned Saturday night from Rochester, Minn., where they had gone Thursday because of Mrs. Cooney's illness.
Mrs. Cooney had taken a leading part in church, civic and social activities. She was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church and past president of Trinity Guild of the parish. One of her chief interests was the American Legion Auxiliary. She was instrumental in organizing the Iowa Department of the Auxiliary, which she had served as treasurer for several years. She had also been on the state executive committee for a number of years. She was a charter member and past president of the Carroll unit, American Legion Auxiliary. Mrs. Cooney, who had headed Priscilla Alden Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, as regent, was currently serving as chaplain. She was a member of the Clio Club, Carroll's oldest study club. She was active in the Carroll County Council of Republican Women.
A lifelong resident of Carroll, Mrs. Cooney was born here June 5, 1887. The former Clara Bell Culbertson, she was the daughter of Robert Y. and Etta Bell Culbertson, who were pioneers in the Glidden community. Her father was an early day businessman in Carroll. After her graduation from Carroll High School, she attended Iowa State Teachers College at Cedar Falls for a short time. Her marriage to Mr. Cooney, a judge of the 16th Judicial District of Iowa, took place June 16, 1920, at Fort Dodge.
Surviving with her husband are a brother, F.H. Culbertson of Carroll, who has been spending the winter with his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Robert W. Beste, at St. Charles, Mo.; her niece, Mrs. Beste, the former Helen Adelaide Culbertson, and a nephew, Frederick P. Culbertson of Carroll.
Mrs. Cooney was preceded in death by her parents, and a brother, Frank Culbertson.
