Clara Peterson was born to Oscar and Gurina Vik in a small ranch home in Sweet Grass County north of Big Timber, MT on December 16, 1923. She attended a rural grade school, and later completed high school in Big Timber. She then attended Northwest Bible College in Lemmon, SD. She married her bible college sweetheart, Edward Yecha on June 11, 1942, and soon they were pastoring at a Church of God in Harlowtown, MT. Approximately a year after serving as pastors, they were both employed by International Bible College in Saskatchewan, and then later at Northwest Bible College in both Lemmon and later in Minot, ND. They were blessed with a son, David in their early married life. Clara taught typing, shorthand, and other secretarial courses at the bible colleges, and she and Ed were both involved in college music ministry during this time, which involved traveling for musical outreach and regular radio broadcasts. Clara sang with Ed, and other ensemble members frequently. Ed was lost in a fatal car accident on April 13, 1952, and after one more year in Minot, Clara and David moved to Cleveland, TN. She served as the dean of women at what is now Lee University, and later was a secretary for the Church of God headquarters in Cleveland. Since she needed transportation to see her family in central Montana, it just so happened she was able to catch a ride with a young man who was driving truck from Thunder Hawk, SD to the west coast. She later married this truck driver, Glenn Peterson on May 25, 1957. Glenn and Clara resided on the family farm north of Thunder Hawk where they raised cattle and grain, along with continuing Glenn's trucking operation. During this time, they were blessed with two sons, Marlin and Mark. Clara involved herself in a number of ways during her time on the farm, including teaching Sunday school and Wednesday night classes, worship leading in her church, leading music for Good News Club and local nursing homes, driving school bus, serving in her church women's ministry groups, being involved in two community homemaker clubs, and often was called upon as a vocal soloist in her own church and throughout the community for numerous specials and funerals, She was an outstanding cook, whether it was just something for coffee, or a full-blown, sit-down meal. No one ever left her table hungry. A couple years after Glenn passed away from illness in January of 1988, Clara moved into a home in Lemmon. She continued to be very involved in her church and community, and was able to have many years enjoying her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In 2004, she moved to an assisted living facility in Bismarck, and finally was a resident at the Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center in late 2011. Clara passed away on Friday morning, January 18, 2013 at the Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center in Bismarck, ND. She is survived by her three sons, David Yecha M.D., Gettysburg, SD, Marlin (Leslie) Peterson, Bismarck, ND and Mark Peterson, Lemmon, SD; 9 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Christine Christman, Lemmon, SD. Clara was preceded in death by her husbands, Edward Yecha and Glenn Peterson; one daughter-in-law, Joanne Yecha; her parents; one brother, Chris Vik; and one sister, Olga Savchenko. A family service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday morning, January 21, 2013 at the New Hope Worship Center.
