Clara Mae (Massey) Hunt, 86 years of age, of Minden, Nebraska (formerly of Axtell, Nebraska) passed away on Friday, October 30, 2015 at the Bethany Home in Minden. Clara Mae was born April 11, 1929 at Harlan, Kansas, the third of six children born to Francis LeRoy and Hazel May (Baker) Massey. She was baptized at the United Methodist Church in Republican City. Her great-grandfather, Eli Massey was one of the earliest pioneers of Phillips County, Kansas, where he homesteaded south of Republican City. The family ventured to Byron and Riverton, Nebraska, until settling to Republican City. She received her education at Republican City, where she graduated from Republican City High School with the class of 1947. On September 21, 1947 Clara Mae was united in marriage to Arthur E. Hunt at Republican City and to this union four sons were born: Arthur William, Albert LeRoy, David Allen, and Larry Lynn. The family made their home in Axtell, where they owned and operated the Axtell Café and made many friends throughout the years. In the years to come they relocated to Dodge City, Kansas, where Clara Mae operated a ceramic shop which she called “You Do It” in Hays and Dodge City. She also enjoyed teaching ceramic classes and loved collecting antiques. In February of 2000, she was preceded in death by her husband, Art. She was a past member of the United Methodist Church in Republican City and was involved with the VFW Auxiliary in the years past. Besides her husband and parents, Clara Mae was preceded in death by three brothers: Howard Lee Massey, Raymond Massey and his wife, Marguerite, and Floyd Massey, a niece, Brenda Koch and a nephew, Craig Massey. She is survived by her four sons: Art Hunt and his wife, Peggy of Oklahoma, LeRoy Hunt and his wife, Priscilla of Hays, Kansas, and David Hunt and Larry Hunt both of Kansas; eight grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; one brother, Robert Massey and his wife, Wanda of Axtell; one sister, Donna J. Johnson of Hastings, Nebraska; sister-in-law, Sally Massey of Holdrege; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. There will be no visitation, the family is honoring Clara Mae’s wish for cremation. A memorial has been established in Clara Mae’s honor and will be designated at a later date.
