Clara Macie Squier was born at Baraboo, Wisconsin, on September 23, 1879, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Tilgner. She moved with parents to live on a farm in Union County, South Dakota west of Hawarden, Iowa in 1881. Clara Macie Squier was born at Baraboo, Wisconsin, on September 23, 1879, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Tilgner. She moved with parents to live on a farm in Union County, South Dakota west of Hawarden, Iowa in 1881. In 1883 her parents moved to Hawarden, and she was a lifelong resident of this comumunity thereafter. She attended Hawarden Public Schools and was active in many community functions. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Hawarden and attended regularly. On October 21, 1933, she was married to John Albert Sqier and they lived on their farm Northeast of Hawarden for many years. To this union were born three daughters, Mrs. M. F. (Evelyn) Coddington of Pierre, South Dakota, Mrs, L. W. Esther) Sanders of Palo Alto, California and Mrs. A. C. (Helen) Henning of Minot, North Dakota and one son, James J. Squier residing in rural Hawarden. She had eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She passed away at her home in Hawarden, August 19, 1970, after hospitalization for a broken hip. She is also survived by three sisters, Gretchen Green of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Charlotte Odney of Bellevue, Washington, and Hazel Johnson of San Francisco, California, and one brother, John E. Tilgner of Hawarden, Iowa. One brother, Arthur Tilgner, preceded her in death. Funeral services were held Saturday, August 22 with with Rev. Michael Strom officiating. Burial was in Grace Hill cemetery. Out of town relatives and friends attending the memorial were: Mrs. M. F. Coddington of Pierre, South Dakota; Mr. and Mrs. Albert Honning of Minot, North Dakota; Mrs. Raymond Camp and Cary of North Carolina; Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Coddington of Iowa City; Mrs. Lloyd Helland of Fedora, South Dakota; Mrs. Richard Wingler of Sioux Falls; Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Eicher, Mr. and Mrs. William Eichel and Miss Dorothy Eichel, all of Parker, South Dakota.
