Read More	In memory of Clara Ovinda Lindley Wherry -- Clara Ovinda Lindley was born on January 14, 1903 to Ole Lindley and Anna Marie Heggerusta Lindley. Clara grew up, along with her eleven brothers and sisters, on the family farm near Osage, Iowa. Clara was baptized on March 1, 1903 at Rock Creek Lutheran Church, in Osage and was later confirmed there on June 2, 1918. She had a happy childhood though the family did not have many luxuries. As a child she learned to work hard and was pleased with one small gift at Christmas time. As a mature young woman, Clara met and married Loran Wherry. Their wedding, which occurred in sister Sarah's home in Minneapolis on March 19, 1928, was a double wedding. Clara's sister, Laura, married Loran's brother, Ralph, during the same ceremony. While they lived in Waterloo, Loran worked as a barber and was active in community affairs, serving for a number of years on the city council. Their marriage was blessed by the births of two daughters, Darlene and Marlys. Clara found a great deal of fulfillment in being a wife and mother. She created a loving and happy home-life for her family. She enjoyed her house and yard and especially enjoyed shopping. The church was always very important to Clara. She was a member of one of the women's circles at First Lutheran and was loyal in worship attendance. One friend said of her, "If Clara didn't get to church, she was lost." On October 7, 1972 Loran died. His funeral was held at the First Lutheran Church with burial in Osage. After suffering a broken hip in December of 1989, Clara was able to make some progress toward renewed health. But she began to fail over the summer necessitating a move to Faith Home in Osage. After a steady decline, Clara died there on December 2, 1990. She is remembered by her family and friends as a loving person who was quiet, orderly, and loyal. Her family was centered in her family and the church. She was, as one person put it, "a good woman". Clara Wherry is survived by her brother, Melvin Lindley, and sisters, Alice Schulz, Ida Bisbee, and O'lava Koch. She is also survived by her two daughters, Darlene Surface of Eldora, Iowa and Marlys Spiegel of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. There are six grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Services were held on December 7, 19990 at First Lutheran Church in Waterloo, Iowa. Burial was in the cemetery in Osage, Iowa.
