Read More	Obituary August 27, 2005 \| Sioux City Journal (IA) Section: News ALTON, Iowa -- Mrs. Clara Scholten, 104, of Alton passed away on Thursday, Aug. 25, 2005, at Plymouth Manor Care Center in Le Mars, Iowa. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Alton Presbyterian Church with Ron Brink, C.L.P., officiating. Burial will be prior to the service at the Nassau Township Cemetery, near Alton. A family prayer service will be 9:30 a.m. Monday at Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City, Iowa. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. Sunday, with the family present from 3 to 5 p.m., at the funeral home. Sympathies may be sent online at www.oolman.com. Clara was born Feb. 19, 1901, on a farm near Newkirk, Iowa, the daughter of Herman and Susan (Vander Pol) Van Zandbergen. On Jan. 22, 1925, she married Gerrit L. "Gary" Scholten in Alton. They made their home in Alton where she was a homemaker and also worked at many varied jobs. She was employed at a grocery store, a drive-in, a drapery shop and in the Alton Public School cafeteria as head cook. In addition, she owned and operated a millinery shop, a cafe and her own drapery business. Gary passed away on April 16, 1973, in Orange City. In later years, Mrs. Scholten became a resident of Pioneer Memorial Home in Orange City. She transferred to Franken Manor in Sioux Center, Iowa, and later to the Plymouth Manor Care Center. She was an active member of Alton Presbyterian Church. As an avid basketball and baseball fan, she supported the area schools. She spent many hours on her hobbies of tatting, crocheting, knitting, embroidering and sewing. Clara was devoted to her family. She was delighted when people came to visit, either to play cards or just socialize. They usually visited over coffee and tea, served with her delicious homemade chocolate chip cookies or a piece of her renowned lemon meringue pie. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a great-grandson, six brothers and two sisters. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be directed to either the Alton Presbyterian Church or the Plymouth Manor Care Center, in care of Rodney Scholten, 711 West Valley Drive, Le Mars, Iowa 51031.
