Highland Recorder December 8, 1899 Miss Clara Gum 28, daughter of Mr. Peter Gum, Meadow Dale, died Dec. 1, at Johns Hopkins hospital, Baltimore. It was impossible to reach the family by telegraph and they were notified by a letter. An account of the death came out in a paper and reached here at the same time of the letter. The body was shipped home for burial. Staunton Spectator & Vindicator December 15, 1899 Miss Clara Gum, aged 28 years, daughter of Peter Gum, of Meadowdale, Va., died at Johns Hopkins Hospital, from the effects of an overdose of laudanum one day last week. She applied at the hospital for treatment, and was admitted to the free ward. As is customary, she was taken in charge by one of the hospital nurses, who accompanied her to a room. The nurse left the room for a few minutes. On returning she found the woman in a stupid condition. One of the hospital physicians was summoned, and it was found that she had swallowed the poison. In a corner of the room was found a bottle labelled "laudanum." Work was immediately begun in an effort to resuscitate her, but the effort failed. She died at 2 o'clock next morning. The unfortunate woman is remembered by several of the hospital officials as a good-looking young woman, who entered the hospital but a few hours before, apparently in a good mood. One official conversed with her for quite a time, and was surprised to learn of her death from such a cause. By looking over the records, it was found that she was a patient there about a year ago suffering then from a complicated malady. Coroner Silljacks was notified, but declined to hold an inquest.
