Johnson, pastor ,the Rev J.G. Long Jr, & the Rev. C.B. Gibbs officiating. A large crowd was in attendance. Mr. Gum. a son of the late Peter & Nancy Dever Gum, was born at Meadowdale November 11, 1863. He followed his father in the cattle business and made a life career of dealing in cattle, being active until four years prior to his death. He was a director of The Citizens Bank & of the First & Citizens Bank & Trust Company. He was a member of the Monterey Presbyterian Church and served a number of years as Deacon. Mr. Gum was twice married. His first marriage to Miss Ruby Williams was in 1883. Soon after this marriage he moved to Bath County residing there about 40 years before moving to Vanderpool in Highland County. Later he moved to his residence here. His second marriage was to Miss Fleeta Coakley of Harrisonburg in 1927. He died Sunday morning August 28 1949 at his residence here. For three years he had been confined practically to his room. Surviving are his widow, and five children, Mrs. G.D Swadley, Vanderpool. Mrs. Grace Herold, Wheeling, W. Va., Knox Gum, Connellsville, Pa, A.P. Gum, here and Mrs. J.W. Mackey, Staunton; 14 grandchildren. One brother, Mr. Dennis H. Gum, Meadowdale, also survives. Active pallbearers were his grand children and June Williams. Interment was in the Monterey Cemetery. Lee Gum drove away from town a few weeks ago, without so much as “by your leave,” telling no one of his mission or objective, some friends surmised that he was under the domination of the little love god, that Cupid had set the matrimonial bee buzzing and so it proved. Witness the following from the Staunton News-Leader of last Saturday: Mr. and Mrs. N. R. Coakley, of Mt Clinton, announce the marriage of their daughter, Fleta Fern, to Mr. R. Lee Gum, of Monterey, at South Mills, N.C., Saturday evening, Jan. 15, by the Rev. W. F. Walters. Mr. Gum is a prominent citizen of Monterey and one of the leading cattle dealers of Highland. His bride has, for two consecutive years, been in charge of the Highland Mercantile Company’s millinery rooms, and during her stay here has made many friends who will welcome her as the bride of Mr. Gum and a resident of the town. Mr. and Mrs. Gum reached Monterey Tuesday evening.
