Clare LaVonne Harris Porter, 69, passed away October 27, 1992, at Clarkson Hospital in Omaha, Douglas County, Nebraska. The funeral service was held Thursday, October 29th, at the Massena Methodist Church. Officiating at the service was the Rev. Robert D. Foster. Music was provided by Carolyn Groves, organist; and, Carrie Ross and Michal Sue Boos, soloists. Pallbearers were John Casey, Louis Holste, David Porter, Davis Ellis, Steve Porter and David Stapleton. Honorary bearers were Kyle Williams, David Spieker, Shane Williams, Ralph Wickey, LeRoy Hansen and Harry Stapleton. Doug, Jean and Drew Williams were in charge of flowers. Interment was in the Massena Cemetery. . Clare LaVonne Porter was born September 16, 1923, to Austin Thomas Harris and Barbara E. (Mehlmann) Harris in Cass County, Iowa. . Clare attended country school, graduated from Anita High School in May of 1941 and later from Drake University. She taught school in Cass County for several years. . Clare married Max Elwood Porter on January 22, 1942. To this union five children were born: Carol, Betty, Becky, Bill and Sue. They farmed south of Cumberland, Iowa, two years and then purchased and moved to a farm northwest of Massena in 1945. In 1960 they started the Porter Construction Company and Clare was secretary and coordinator for this company. In 1972 they built a new home and moved into Massena. . She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Carol Hodge; two brothers, Russell and Varel Harris; and a grandson, Jeffery Hodge. . She is survived by her husband, Max, of Massena; three daughters; Betty Stice and husband, Richard. Becky Powell and husband Donald and Sue Holste and husband Bob, all of Massena; one son, Bill Porter of Massena; son-in-law, James Hodge of Newton; sisters: Mildred Stapleton and Melva Casey, both of Massena; thirteen grandchildren: Mr. and Mrs. Jim Hodge, Mr. and Mrs. Reggie Hodge and Mr. and Mrs. Danny Hodge, all of Newton, Mr. and Mrs. Rich Stice of Massena, Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Travis of Wichita, KS, Tony Stice of Cumberland, Mr. and Mrs. Rick Ross of Cumberland, Tammie Powell of Des Moines, Misty Powell of Massena, Matthew Porter of Tacoma, Washington, Mr. and Mrs. Don Ward of Lewis, Mr. and Mrs. Daryn Behlers of Corning, and Mr. and Mrs. Mike Carroll of Stanberry, Missouri; fourteen great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends. .
