Max Elwood Porter, 81, of Massena, Cass County, Iowa, was born January 30, 1921, at Reno south of Cumberland, Iowa, to William Earl Porter and Ruth Octavia (Smith) Porter. He passed away February 28, 2002 at Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic, Iowa. . Max attended country school in Reno, Iowa, until his family moved to Cumberland where he graduated high school. Max Elwood Porter, 81, of Massena, Cass County, Iowa, was born January 30, 1921, at Reno south of Cumberland, Iowa, to William Earl Porter and Ruth Octavia (Smith) Porter. He passed away February 28, 2002 at Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic, Iowa. . Max attended country school in Reno, Iowa, until his family moved to Cumberland where he graduated high school. He married Clare LaVonne Harris in Maryville, Missouri, January 22, 1942. To this union five children were born: Carol, Betty, Rebecca, William, and Mary Sue. . Max farmed south of Cumberland for two years. Then he purchased and moved his family to a farm northwest of Massena where they lived and raised their family. . In 1960 Max and Clare started the Porter Construction Company. They ran the company until the 80's when Max's health prevented him from continuing the business. In 1972 they built a new home and moved into Massena. . He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Clare; daughter Carol Hodge of Newton, three sisters, Ester Porter of Cumberland, Bobby Malmberg of Red Oak and Beth Smith of Massena and one grandchild who died at birth, Jeffery Hodge of Newton. . He is survived by three daughters: Betty Stice and husband Richard of Massena, Rebecca Powell of Osceola, Mary Sue Holste and husband Robert of Massena; one son William Porter of Red Oak; son-in-law James Hodge of Newton; two sisters Wanda Penfold and husband Marvin of Corning and Geneva Layman of Dalhart, Texas; one brother Eldon Porter and wife Betty of Cumberland; thirteen grandchildren: Jim Hodge, Reggie Hodge and wife Julie, Danny Hodge wife Terri all of Newton, Rich Stice wife Julie of Fairview, Tennessee, Cindy Travis husband Dennis of Wichita, Kansas, Tony Stice wife LuAnn of Audubon, Carrie Ross husband Rick of Cumberland, Tammie Powell, Misty Powell both of West Des Moines, Matthew Schrier of Atlantic, Jodi Ward husband Donald of Lewis, Amy Harter of Atlantic, and Tabitha Carroll husband Mike of Stanberry, Missouri; 30 great grandchildren; other relatives and friends. . The family of Max Porter wishes to express their gratitude for all the acts of kindness shown to them in their time of sorrow and invite you to share a lunch at the Massena United Methodist Church following services at the cemetery. .
