Open visitation will be held Friday, April 9, at the Powers Funeral Home in Afton from 2 to 7 p.m. with the family receiving friends from 5 to 7 p.m. A memorial service will be held at Mount Ayr Regular Baptist Church at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, April 10, with a luncheon to follow. Online condolence may be made at www.powersfh.com. Clarence was born June 16, 1927, in the family farm home northeast of Afton. He attended Dodge Number 6 School and graduated from Afton High School in 1945. After serving in the post World War 2 military occupation of Japan, he traveled the state employed by the Iowa State College Dairy Husbandry Division. He began farming southeast of Afton in 1951. He married Irene Edwards on September 3, 1954, and they continued farming until 1985. While farming, he also did door-to-door sales work for Stark Nursery and Electrolux Company. Following his years of farming, he and Irene moved to Murray, and Clarence worked for groups homes in Creston, Afton, and Lamoni. He retired in 1992. Clarence enjoyed traveling and took his family on numerous trips to visit relatives, places of historic interest, and natural scenery. During his and Irene's travels, they visited all lower 48 states, most of the Canadian provinces, and took day trips into Mexico. When no longer able to travel because of the gradual loss of his eyesight, Clarence's focus turned to writing. He authored Frontiers Calling, Virgin of Nazareth, and for family distribution, Grandpa's Stories. Clarence was born again when he was nine years old. At that time he came to an understanding of his condemned state before God. He confessed his sins trusting Christ to bear the penalty for his sin and to be his Savior. He always made his walk with Christ a priority. He served his Lord in many ways including teaching Bible classes, singing, and preaching, as well as ministering in nursing homes on various occasions. Throughout his life he also helped with repairs and improvements on church properties. Clarence is survived by six children: Priscilla (Dave) Carlson of Prescott, IA; Paul (Barbara) Stalcup of Osceola, IA; Catherine (Dwayne) Straw of Omaha, NE; Daniel (Kristina) Stalcup of Des Moines, IA; Thomas (Vera) Stalcup of Tingley, IA; Ron (Tammy) Stalcup of Beloit, WI; 30 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents John and Ida (Bole) Stalcup; his wife of 65 years Irene (Edwards) Stalcup; all his siblings: Margaret (Harry) Bullock, Bryan (Dora) Stalcup; infant twins, infant Rubina, Mary Josephine (Max) Sedgwick, and Ruth (Lyle) Means; and his great-granddaughter Galina Faith Sargent.
