WELCH WELL KNOWN BUSINESS MAN PASSED AWAY FOLLOWING OPERATION - WAS EXPERT ACCOUNTANT AND PROMINENT CITIZEN Clarence E. Welch, a prominent business man of this city, passed away at the hospital in Mason City Sunday morning, January 26, following an operation performed some ten days ago. Mr. Welch was doing well from the operation when complications developed which caused his death. Mrs. Welch, who had returned to her home in Eldora, was called to his bedside and was with him when the end came. Mr. Welch was a member of the firm of Pelsen & Welch, certified public accountants. He was a man of the highest integrity and worth, and was liked and respected by all. As an accountant he was second to none, and had been entrusted with the auditing of many large business concerns of the state. He was a member of the Congregational church in active service, of the Masonic lodge, Knights of Pythias and Modern Woodmen. In the death of Mr. Welch the community looses one of it's most upright and honored citizens. The family have the sympathy of all in their great bereavement. Clarence E. Welch was born in Grafton, Vermont, February 22, 1860, and died at the Park Hospital, Mason City, January 26, 1919. He lived in Vermont until he was 21 years of age. About 35 years ago he came to Eldora from Waseca, Minn., accepting the cashiership of the City Bank, later City State Bank, and now First National Bank, which position he held until 1896, when he moved to Whitten to manage a bank at that place. In 1895 he was elected county auditor and was re-elected in 1902. After serving as auditor he engaged in work of tax ferriting, in which he was very successful. On October 22, 1888 he was united in marriage to Ida Tucker in Clay City, Kansas. To this marriage were born four children, Floy of Eldora, Marian Edwards of Benson, Minnesota, William in France, and Dorothy, also of Eldora. Mr. and Mrs. Edwards and two children came Monday from Benson to be present for the funeral service which was held at home at 2:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, Albert E. Rice officiating.
