Now as we are somewhere north of middle age, we realize we have witnessed something truly special. Clarence F. Schley December 15, 1925 – November 5, 2020 Clarence Schley passed away November 5 in his home at Grand Living at Lake Lorraine in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Clarence was born at home on our family farm east of Stratford, SD to Alex and Helena (Stange) Schley. He was one of 4 sons. He attended country grade schools near the farm and graduated from Stratford High School’s class of 4 students in 1944. Dad never questioned his ambition to be a farmer and cattleman. He often recalled riding the train to the St. Paul stockyards with his first load of sold cattle. His young adult years also included interests in playing baseball, taxidermy, photography and hunting skunks. He was active in the Farmers’ Union and sang bass in a quartet called “The Four Flats.” Then he met Gloria. Their jitter-bugging skills could clear a dance floor. They were a beautiful pair, smart, motivated and full of fun. Mom always said none of the other guys ever came close compared to Dad, even though he made a poor decision letting her drive his car to the ice cream shop on their first date. She covered her face when he tried to take her picture. One skunk hunt was enough for her. After her boots got stuck in the stockyard and her bare foot stepped out into the yuck, she walked back to the house without saying a word. She didn’t offer to help again. Clarence had met his match. They were married September 18, 1949 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Stratford, the church Dad’s father helped build in 1907. Dad started his career with nothing but was hard-working, competitive and ambitious. He ran across the yard between projects. He could fix anything. If machinery broke down in the field, he fixed it over night so it could return to the field the next day. He aggressively grew the feedlot, driving hundreds of miles several days a week to buy cattle. He would buy the odd color, lop-eared or one-eyed “critter” or stay later than any other buyer to get the best deal. He pushed hard and worked long. I remember looking at him sleeping before leaving for school, because he had come home from working long after I had gone to bed. Yet somehow, he made it to the band concerts, the wrestling matches, the 4-H events or a sock hop because my friends always asked MY parents to chaperone. In the early 1980’s, Mom and Dad moved to Prairiewood, just outside of Aberdeen, as Jerry and Jacie moved to the farm. Dad continued to work and buy cattle but also took up golf, cross-country skiing, and gardening. He was proud of his flowers and arranged rose bouquets. He participated in the Dakota Heritage Barbershop Chorus for many years. Mom and Dad enjoyed travel, community theater and their home at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. He reached mysterious fame at Halloween parties thanks to Mom’s imagination and sewing talents, her pouting and maybe a stiff drink. He loved games, card playing, jig-saw puzzles and even learned to paint in later years. Dad wanted most to be remembered as a successful cattleman who started from nothing. Instead, he will be most remembered for the last 20 years of total love and dedication as caregiver for his sweetheart. Dad learned a new level of love and patience as well as new skills in cooking, laundry, curling Mom’s hair, choosing her clothes, and home management. He cherished her and smothered her with hand holding, kisses and hugs, keeping her with us when Alzheimer’s disease was trying to take her away. He could look past dementia’s fog and communicate with Mom’s beautiful brain and personality that are still so definitely intact. What better triumph in life than showing extreme love daily? Dad leaves us with a legacy of being madly in love for 71 years with his deserving partner. Clarence is survived by his wife Gloria, kids Jerry (Jacie) Schley of Stratford and Joey (Rich) Giblin of Sedgwick, KS. Grand kids are Dusty (Brittany) Schley and Haylee (Brandon) Kruger as well as the Giblin family in Washington state. Clarence is also survived by 5 great grandkids and his younger brother Duane (Sandy) Schley of Edina, Minn. He is preceded in death by his parents and brothers Kermit and LaVerne. A celebration of Clarence’s life will be held at 1:30 on Friday, November 13th at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Aberdeen, followed by a graveside service at East Rondell Cemetery east of Stratford. Due to pandemic precautions, masks and distancing are required. The service will be live streamed for viewing at home via www.spitzerfuneralhome.com. We appreciate 94 years of love and friendship from the community and will feel your energy and prayers no matter the distance. A memorial has been established with The Alzheimer’s Association of SD, 4304 S Technology Dr, Sioux Falls, SD 57106. Sorry, Dad.
