Bailey, of Traer, a few months ago, together with his two sons, eleven and fifteen years of age, were drowned in the Cedar river east of Mt. Auburn Friday afternoon. A party were in bathing when the two Mayhew boys stepped into a deep hole in the river bed. Their cries attracted their father's attention and he hastened to their aid. He was a good swimmer, but instead of rescuing one son at a time he attempted to save both, and all three went down together, as the boys clung to him so tenaciously' that he could not use his arms. Mrs. Mayhew's own son, a lad of five, had a narrow escape. He too went beyond his depth and was rescued by his mother, who was nearby. The body of one of the boys was recovered in about an hour and the other an hour later but the father's body was not found until 9 a. m. Saturday. It had floated 200 feet below the scene of the accident. The triple funeral was held at the home near Mt. Auburn Monday at 9 a. m. Three auto hearses conveyed the bodies to the Watkins cemetery in south Benton, where other members of the family are buried. The funeral was attended by an immense crowd Mr. Mayhew was a prosperous farmer of high standing in the community. He owned a fine farm upon which the family lived. He had only the two children, but brothers and other relatives live in Benton county. We give here with extracts from the Vinton Times' report of the sad tragedy . Mr. and Mrs. Mayhew and three children, together with their guests, the Misses Nola Schuller and Ruth Wilson, of Traer, and Mrs. Fred Brand and Mario Brand had gone to Norwood's Camp for the day. In the afternoon the picnickers went into the river, with the exception of Mrs. Brand and another lady. Mr. Mayhew was teaching his wife to swim, being quite a good swimmer. Elmer, Chester and little Oscar and the girls were wading about and kept going out a little farther into the deeper water. Elmer and Chester were beyond the other members of the party and none of the others noticed that they had disappeared from sight until Mrs. Brand called from the shore. They had stepped off into a hole. Nola Schuller, who was the nearest to the boys, felt one foot slipping into a hole and she was thrown forward onto her face. She dug her hands into the sand and made towards the shore but says she thought she was gone and still cannot see how she escaped drowning with the others as she was unable to swim. The boys had gone down twice before the father realized that there was anything wrong and when they sank for the third time they took their father with them, and holding him with a death grip, he was unable to save himself. In the excitement which prevailed the life of little Oscar Jones, the son of Mrs. Mayhew, who is only 5 years old, and who was also wading in the river, came near being ended. He had gone down twice when the mother's attention was called and when his body appeared for the last time Mrs. Mayhew caught him and carried him to the bank. When Mrs. Mayhew realized that the father and sons were possibly drowned her condition was pitiable. She rushed to the water and had it not been that friends held her back she would have joined them in their watery grave. She begged and pleaded for the searchers to hurry in their work in order that they might be taken from the river before life was ex¬ tinct. It was only by main force that she was finally taken away from the river to her home and then it was necessary for a physician to be called. All night Mrs. Mayhew was in an excited condition, and her continued appeals that something might be done wrung the hearts of the friends and relatives who had remained with her. She was married to Clarence Mayhew last February. Mr. Mayhew was a son of O. Mayhew, of Blairstown. His mother died five years ago. There are two sisters and two brothers surviving. They are Mrs. T. O. Powers, of Hawkeye, Iowa; Mrs. Cora Curtiss, of Watkins; Merle S., living near Garrison, and E . R. Mayhew, of Watkins. There have been eight deaths in the family in six years .
