One of the victims was a Hagerstown driver. CLARENCE JUNIOR KARN, 23, 41 Fairground Avenue, who was pronounced dead on arrival at the Washington County Hospital. He suffered a fractured skull, fractured neck and a punctured lung. An elderly woman pedestrian, Mrs. Florence E. Swisher, 80, of State Line, was almost instantly killed as she crossed Route 11 in front of her home when she was struck by the automobile driven by Guy M. Spielman, 42, of 226 North Locust Street, Hagerstown. The injured occupants of the car driven by Karn were William H. Shoemaker, 21, 607 West Washington Street, and Robert W. Smith, 22, 382 South Cleveland Avenue. Both were reported in "fair" condition at the Washington County Hospital. Shomaker suffered a lacerated left arm and possible internal injuries and Smith suffered multiple severe lacerations of the entire body and head and chest injuries. The crash occurred about 12:15 a.m. one quarter mile south of Sharpsburg on Route 34. State Trooper Harry F. Bowman, who investigated said the Karn auto was traveling north on the highway and apparently failed to negotiate a right curve and ran off the left side of the road into some gravel and then returned to the right side of the road and struck a tree. It was reported that the car rolled in such a manner that it struck the tree about ten feet above the ground. All three men were pinned in the wreckage and it was necessary to use a tow truck to pry the wreckage apart. Two ambulances responded to the call - the Boonsboro ambulance and the Community Rescue Service. The accident in which Mrs. Swisher met her death occurred at 8:40 Friday night. The Hagerstown driver posted $500 bond for his appearence at a coroner's inquest to be held August 30. Mrs. Swisher was going across the highway to a neighbor's hme when she was hit. A native of Washington County, Mrs. Swisher was the daughter of the late John and Barbara (Flory) Gruber. She was a member of Trinity Reformed Church at State Line and of the Women's Guild. Surviving are her husband, John F. Swisher; children, Leroy, State Line; Howard, Greencastle; Ross and Mrs. Marie Minnich both of Hagerstown; Robert R., of Hagerstown Route 3; and Mrs. Mildred Stitely of Baltimore; fourteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services Monday at 2:30 p.m. at the Trinity Reformed Church, State Line, the Rev. G. E. Plott and the Rev. N. W. Breckbill officiating. Burial in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Greencastle. Friends may call at the Minnich Funeral Home, Greencastle at the church an hour before the funeral service. CLARENCE JUNIOR KARN, 23, of 41 Fairground Avenue, was the son of Mrs. Sarah A. Karn and the late Clarence Karn. He was employed by the Community Cab Company, and was a veteran of the Korean War. Besides his mother he is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mary (Netz) Karn, and a son, Clarence J., Jr., at home; three sisters, Mrs. Edith Netz, Keedysville; Miss Charlotte and Miss Loretta Karn, both of Hagerstown. four brothers, Norman of Leesburg, Va.,; Lawrence, Wilmer and Vernon, all of Hagerstown. The body was removed to the Bast Funeral Home, Boonsboro, where services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Vernon Miles officiating. Interment will follow in Boonsboro Cemetery.
