Reed, former county commissioner and one of the best known citizens of this community, died at the Citizens Hospital Tuesday morning at 7:50 o'clock from critical injuries sustained less than 24 hours previously, when he was trampled by a horse he was trying to saddle up at his home on the upper Light ranch. Just what the main contributing factors to the fatal accident were may never be known, but it is believed that Mr. Reed either was kicked by the animal, which was tied in its stall in the barn, or he stumbled and fell and rolled under it and was knocked unconscious before he was able to escape. He bad just left the house about 25 minutes before he was found by his wife, who chanced to go to the barn on an errand. When Mrs. Reed found her husband, he was lying on his back with the horse standing on his neck and chest. She managed to get the animal untied and out of the barn and then made her husband as comfortable as possible before she dashed to her nearest neighbors, Mr. and Mrs. Leo Light, for help. On the way she perchanced to meet Mr. Light and breathlessly told him of what had happened. Medical attention was given to the injured man and doctors were called immediately, and preparations were made for a hurried trip to the hospital. The unfortunate victim was placed in the car belonging to Al Maurin, which is equipped with folding seats, and brought to Aspen, where he died the following morning. The accident happened about nine o'clock Monday morning. Mr. Reed was severely crushed about the back, face, neck, and chest. Several ribs were broken and he suffered a severe spinal injury, the sixth and seventh vertebrae were crushed, which resulted in his death. He was paralyzed from the neck down. He was born in Iowa on December 29, 1870 and had resided in this community for nearly 40 years, taking up residence here shortly after he was married to Miss Lillie Townsley at Mt. Etna, Iowa in 1893. For many years they lived on the Shield "O" ranch, moving later to the Brewster ranch on Brush Creek and in April of this year they moved to the upper Leo Light ranch. Mr. Reed served as county commissioner for two consecutive terms, eight years and was one of the most widely known and respected citizens of this community and his untimely, tragic death cast a pall of sorrow over all. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge. He is survived by his sorrowing widow; one daughter, Mrs. Manola Tetter of Pocatello, Idaho; one brother, Charles Reed of Iowa; and one grandson, Claude Erskine, of San Francisco. Funeral services will be conducted at two o'clock Friday afternoon from the Community Church with Rev. H. S. Davis officiating. Graveside services will be conducted by the local Masonic Lodge. Burial will be made in Red Butte Cemetery The citizens of Aspen and the surrounding community wish to extend their heartfelt sympathies to Mrs. Reed and family during their sorrowing bereavement.
