(notes from the person who originally made the page) ********************* Cherokee Sentinel, Dec. 16, 1938, page 1: Mrs. Clarice Crowder-Thornburg Dead It was indeed a sad happening that caused the death of Mrs. Clarice Crowder-Thornburg, 28, at her home in Baxter Springs on Friday. Her body was found at the home of her husband, Vernie Thornburg, and her brother, Carl Crowder, when they returned from their work at a mine near Picher. The woman's clothing had been saturated with kerosene apparently and set afire. The mystery lay in the identity of the person who extinguished the flames. County Attorney Henbest and Sheriff Fred Simkins bot said that the principal indications were those of suicide, the sheriff declaring that it was "hard to imagine any one doing it that way." An unsigned note said to be in Mrs. Thornburg's handwriting was found. It read: "Forgive what I'm doing. I can't stand it any longer. Now let them talk. Poor Vernie." The Cherokee county officers are still investigating the death, and say they will have more to say in a few days. Mr. Thornburg and Carl both were employed at the Sunflower mine, Mr. Thornburg being a hoister. Mrs. Thornburg will be remembered by many Cherokee folks as Clarice Crowder, and she spent most of her life in and near this city. After her marriage she left for the mining district near Baxter. Besides the widower and brother Carl, she leaves to mourn her death, her father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Loren Crowder of this city; Arthur and Fred Crowder, brothers, also of this city; two sisters, Mrs. Florence Imhoff and Mrs. Gladys Humble, also of near this city. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church Saturday afternoon in charge of Rev. Roy Templin and burial was in the Cherokee cemetery.
