The Gazette Cedar Rapids, Iowa 01 Mar 1935, Fri • Page 13 MAQUOKETA - MRS. CLARINDA ROWAN GARRETT, 90, native of Iowa City, died here Thursday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. D. V. Miller, with whom she had lived since the death in 1926, her husbnd, John Garrett. She lived in the first brick house to be built in Iowa City. It still is standing. Her father, a "forty-niner," was killed by Indians on his way home from the California gold-fields. She was married 70 years ago this week, Feb 26. For many years the family lived near Onlslow, at Steam Mill Corner, but 35 years ago removed to Colfax, where Mr. Garrett died. Surviving are nine of her eleven children: Mrs. Mary Baker, of Colfax, Mrs. Amanda Norris of Des Moines, William Garrett of Adair, Mrs. Nannie Finch of Clinton, Mrs. Miller of Maquoketa, Arthur Garrett of Maquoketa, Mrs. Lizzie Ferris of Des Moines, Mrs. Amy Stickley of Monmounth, and Mrs. Kate Ward of Tucson, Arizona. There are 32 grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Funeral Services will be held Sunday at 2 in the Harrison Funeral Home, the Rev. G. F. Barsalou, Congregational Minister, in charge. Burial will be in South Mineral Cemetery, near Onslow.
