Death of Mrs. Clara Underwood Dear News: The destroyer has been among us. Death is no respecter of persons, unless it be that he chooses the best and purest for himself. And now he has claimed for his own Mrs. Clara (Wright) Underwood, consort of our worthy young friend, I. N. Underwood, who departed this life on Sunday morning, February 18, after a short illness, though she was naturally of rather a delicate constitution. The remains were followed to the grave on Monday by a large concourse of mourning relatives and friends. The funeral services were conducted by the Rev. C. C. Bowers of New Vienna, assisted by the Rev. A. Hixon, both of the M. E. Church, of which the deceased had been a consistent member for many years. Scarcely a year has elapsed since this young couple were united in the holy bonds of matrimony, with fair prospects for a long life of earthly bliss, but thus hath the all-wise Creator claimed his own and parted loving hearts. And thou, stricken mourner, when thou seest the unsympathizing world pass on, remember that the poet saith: "The gay world will laugh When thou art gone; the solemn brood of care Plod on, and each one, as before, will chase His favorite phantom;" And seeing from this, thy value in the eyes of the world, mayst thou turn thy attention even more (if possible) to heavenly things, knowing that thy Creator knows thee still, and in this thy trial, hear the voice of God, and meekly "pass under the rod." Newspaper writers give to all the dead such shining characters, that I can find no words adequate to convey to my readers the feelings of respect which I hold toward a true follower of the meek and lowly Jesus, so I shall attempt no eulogy upon her character, but will leave her with the RighteousJudge. A protracted meeting is now in progress at Auburn M. E. Church, about 2 miles west of Samantha. The meeting is under the charge of the regular ministers of the M. E. Church, assisted by Joseph Wright and others of the Friends, also by Rev. A. J. Hixon of the Church of the Brethren, commonly called Dunkards. There were no accessions at last accounts.
