While death has taken him from amongst us, Clark Stoner, the Christian gentleman that he was, leaves an influence with his fellows that will continue to live in many years yet to come. --------- Clark Rodger Stoner was born on January 24th, 1844, at Connellsville, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, and passed away from earthly scenes to Heavenly bliss March 6th, 1923, at the the ripe old age of 79 years, 1 month and 12 days. The family moved to Illinois while he was yet young and there he was bereft of his parents through death. When he was a young man he went to Smithfield, Penn., where on the 22nd day of December, 1868, he was married to Miss Rachel Jane French. The young couple made their home in Connellsville, Penn., for about nine years. In 1877 they emigrated to Nebraska, locating on a farm east of Nelson. After a few years on the farm they came to the town of Nelson where they have resided ever since. To this union were born three children, viz: Luaretta, William F., and Albert J., all of whom have preceded their father to their Heavenly home. He was a charter member of the I.O.O.F. and was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic. By trade he was an expert cabinet maker and carpenter. When the great Civil War was on, he heard the bugle call to defend his country's flag, and enlisted in Co. E. 14th Penn. Cavalry, September 14th, 1864, and after the hardships and the experiences of the battle and imprisonment he received his honorable discharge May 30th, 1865. Patriotic to the core, he loved his country and was a positive asset to society. He was one of the pioneers of this city and community. He and his family endured the hardships of pioneer life of which we of this generation know nothing about. They sowed the seed and we entered into the harvest. No sooner had he arrived in this community, than he identified himself with its best interests. Nelson was at that time in its very infancy. Unstintingly and heartily did our brother give himself to the building up of these institutions of which we are proud today; the public school and the church. His influence was always toward character building, There was no alloy in his nature. One of the first acts on locating here, be it to his everlasting credit, was to unite with the church of his choice, and for forty-six years he has proclaimed to this community in word and deed, "as for me and my house we will serve the Lord." Forty-four years he has served faithfully and well as Ruling Elder of the Presbyterian church. He being musical, he served the church by singing in the choir and leader of the music for many years. He and his faithful and loving wife have gone through the "troubled waters" more than once. They had seen their children grow up to womanhood and manhood only to see them taken away from them, yet it was with a faith that is "steadfast and sure while the billows roll." He had the grace of God in abundance, always scattering the sunshine and blessing his friends with his cheer. He was highly esteemed by all who knew him. He had come to a ripened old age with a religion that was mellowed with years, a disposition and character that grew more beautiful in kindness, purity and truth. He lives "today in hearts that are left behind." It takes eternity to measure the value of such a life. He has left to mourn his loss, his aged wife after fifty-four years of happy wedlock, two grand daughters, Mrs. Dorothy McGuire of Aurora; and Mrs. Lauretta Hotchkiss, Fairbury; and two great-grand children; also three sisters: Mrs. Mattie Galley, Bellingham, Wash.; Mrs. Annie Collins, Vanderbilt, Penn.; Mrs. Emma Collins, Wellsville, Kansas; and a host of friends today pay him a tribute of a sigh. Funeral services were conducted from the Presbyterian church at half past two o'clock this afternoon, by Pastor S.H. Jones assisted by Rev. H.G. Wilcox of the Methodist church.
