Stanton, who died suddenly at the wheel of his automobile yesterday morning in Martinez, will be held from the Masonic hall here Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, it was announced today. The body was brought to Colusa last evening by Coroner J. D. McNary, who is acting sheriff until the supervisors make an appointment to fill the vacancy. Definite arrangements for the funeral have not been completed. The services probably will be in charge of Meridian Lodge No. 187, F. & A. M., of Arbuckle, of which deceased was a member. The funeral will no doubt be one of the largest ever held in this city, as Sheriff Stanton counted his friends by the hundreds. Many members of the Marysville lodge of Elks will also attend. Stanton was a member of that order for many years. News of his death was wired yesterday to W. E. Langdon, secretary, of Marysville. Mrs. Clara Fonnesbeck, niece of the late sheriff, is on her way to Colusa from Porterville, where she was visiting at the time of his death. Only a few months ago, Mrs. Fonnesbeck moved to Colusa with her children and was keeping house for Sheriff Stanton in the home formerly occupied by the late Judge John Moore. Colusa Daily Sun Tuesday, March 19, 1929, p1, c2 Sheriff's Last Official Act Was Serving Summons For Chavez Case Talesman The last official act performed by the late Sheriff C. D. Stanton was the serving of jury summons on 60 residents of Colusa county. this job he completed Saturday afternoon, returning to Colusa about 4:30 o'clock, according to his deputies. The summons were for persons named to appear for jury duty here next Monday, when the Chavez murder trial reopens. Sheriff Stanton was a witness in the first trial of the case.
