Description	:	Esco was a businessman. He started and ran several businesses including a coal mine and a wholesale produce company. The wholesale produce company operated as Wood Produce Company on Forest Avenue in Knoxville, Tn from about 1950 to 2005. The wholesale produce business changed when retailers like Walmart cut out the middle man and stocked produce directly from the mega-farmer. He started and ran several businesses including a coal mine and a wholesale produce company. The wholesale produce company operated as Wood Produce Company on Forest Avenue in Knoxville, Tn from about 1950 to 2005. The wholesale produce business changed when retailers like Walmart cut out the middle man and stocked produce directly from the mega-farmer. Lots of small farmers and wholesalers were put out of business. Esco was a ruthless businessman and a hard bargainer. He was a penny-pincher who was always trying to get somebody else to pay for his lunch or his cigarettes. It was a trait learned when he grew up poor in Campbell County, TN. Esco doted on his wife Ocie and his kids though. Nothing was too good for his family. That is where his penny-pinching ended. Ocie always had the latest kitchen appliances when Esco could find a good deal on them. Esco was the second child of Louisa Mae Melton and David John Wood. It is thought that Louisa Mae and her baby died during her third childbirth. A note on an old photo stated that his mother died because the doctor that was to attend to the birth was drunk. This is family lore which my uncle confirmed. The local doctor, known as "Doc Willoughby" , was known to favor strong drink. The Doc would end up in the Eastern State Hospital for the mentally insane in his last years. He would die from drinking paragoric, according to my uncle. After his mother died, Elmer and Esco went to live with Frank (David John's brother) and Parlie Wood (Louisa Mae's sister), their uncle and aunt. Frank and Parlie Wood raised Elmer and Esco until they were old enough to leave home. Elmer ran away from home to join the Army and Esco left to work in southwest Virginia where he operated a coal mine. Mining in those days was by mule and people-power with picks and shovels.
