Description	:	By 1932, David John's ancestors had lived in south Campbell County for almost 150 years, back to his great grandfather James Wood. So when TVA came to interview him about his 77 acre farm on the Powell River just south of Demory, he was antagonistic. He told the TVA interviewer that TVA was robbing the people. David John had cleared nearly 50 acres of dense forest to make his farmland useable. He did not want to give it up, but TVA took his 77 acre farm and evicted him to make way for Norris Lake. ... So when TVA came to interview him about his 77 acre farm on the Powell River just south of Demory, he was antagonistic. He told the TVA interviewer that TVA was robbing the people. David John had cleared nearly 50 acres of dense forest to make his farmland useable. He did not want to give it up, but TVA took his 77 acre farm and evicted him to make way for Norris Lake. They gave him $5155 which was enough to buy 17 acres in Bulls Gap, Hawkins County, about 50 miles away. Ironically, a couple of years after moving to make way for Norris Lake, TVA took part of his new farm in Bulls Gap to build Cherokee Lake. TVA first proposed to take the entire farm, but after some public outcry after the TVA land grab to build Norris Lake, cooler heads prevailed and TVA only took the land that was needed. Furthermore, the previous landowners could use the TVA land as long as they held TVA blameless if TVA needed to use the land. This permitted the previous landowners to plant crops on their old land, recognizing that TVA could destroy the crops at any point for TVA's needed use of the land. The family moved from Campbell County to Hawkins County in Feb. 1934. The Wood family subsisted by growing tobacco and raising their own vegetable garden in Hawkins County. But tragedy struck in 1941 when David John suddenly died of a stroke caused by malignant hypertension. David John was a big man and loved to eat meat, which the doctor had advised against. Rev. Joe C Lamb conducted his memorial service at the Cedar Hill Baptist Church. He is laid to rest about 2 miles from where he started his adult life as a farmer (near Cherry Bottom on the Powell River). His widow Mary Catherine would continue to live on the farm, with the help of their son Henry, who remained at home, until 1977. World War II took 3 of David John's sons to serve in Europe, North Africa, and stateside. All three were drafted into service and served honorably from the start of WW II until the end of the war. They would be among the many heroes who would keep this nation free. Later, toward the end of the war, three more sons would serve at the closing of WW II. In all 7 of David John's 11 sons served and sacrificed for the war effort. Their service and sacrifice was not easy, but each son did their duty without complaint because they loved their nation.
