Jefferson Bee - Tuesday, October 20, 1936 - Claude Leland Calder was born near Scranton, Iowa, May 8, 1902, and had attained the age of 34 years, 5 months, and 3 days, when he met his death by accident near Stockton, Iowa, October 11, 1938. He was a son of Marion and Margaret Calder, both of whom preceded him in death. The mother departed from this life March 10, 1930, the father on April 18, 1933. Claude resided in the county of his birth until at the ago of twelve when he moved with his father and brother, Clyde, to Osceola, Iowa, where he spent the greater part of his life. He had always taken much interest in machinery of all kinds, and during the past eight or ten years he had been employed as a dragline operator. His employers and fellow workmen speak highly of his work, also of his dependable and steady qualities. He is survived by a brother, Clyde, of Whittier, California; and a sister, Opal of Scranton, Iowa. There are also two half sisters and one half brother, Jaunita, Margaret, and Wilbur Tatman of Wilton, No. Dak. Besides these there are other relatives and many friends who were shocked by the news of his untimely death, and who unite with his brother and sister in mourning his passing. Claude was a rugged type of young man who had reached the age when men become very efficient at the task that commands their interest. It is difficult to reconcile one's self to a sudden departure such as was his, yet we remember that lingering illness, pain, and helplessness, are to be feared more than sudden death. These Claude was spared. The funeral service was in charge of Rev Macy at the Scranton Church of Christ Wednesday Oct 14. Interment was made in the Willow cemetery.
