CAREY IS KILLED BY FALL Well-Known Ladora Contractor Dies From Broken Neck, After a Fall of a Few Feet Claude S. Carey, a well-known contractor and carpenter of Ladora, was killed last Thursday morning when he fell and suffered a broken neck. He was working on a brooder house about one and one-half feet from the ground and was using his pocket knife to trim off a small portion of the roof which was projecting over the edge. Medical aid was summoned at once but Mr. Carey died before a doctor arrived. Funeral services were held Monday at 10:30 a.m. from the Ladora M.E. church. The sermon was preached by Rev. W. S. Kight of Maxwell, Iowa, who, was assisted in the service by Rev. Hugh Williams and Rev. Suppleet local pastors. Interment was in the I.O.O.F. cemetery at Victor. Claude Smith Carey, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Carey, was born Oct. 4, 1888, at Exeter, Nebr., and died March 21, 1929, at his home in Ladora, Iowa. It was there that he grew to manhood, living most of his life, having moved to Ladora with his parents when he was but nine years old. It was in Ladora that he attacked school, completing his work at an unusually early age. Afterwards he took to the trade of carpentering-the work he engaged in until the day of his death. On Dec. 11, 1912, he was united in marriage to Blanche Dubisher of Williamsburg, Iowa. Since then they made Ladora their home town among the many friends who knew them so well. Ever since his youth Claude had been known for his fine spirit; and his departing leaves a vacancy in our midst. Yet his character continues to bear the beauty and the gentleness of one who has been an influence in his community. He was a member of the Odd Fellows lodge for years. He also held a much respected position on the council of the town. His influences was felt by the M.E. church with which he was affiliated, as well as the sister denomination, the Methodist Protestant church. He had always been a supporter of the church and Sunday School, helping in many ways. After all these years he goes into the company of those who preceded him to the other land. There he will meet those gone before, of whom none are more precious than his father, Charles, and his brothers, Frank and Harry. Three dear ones on earth: his mother, Mrs. Charles Carey; his beloved wife; Blanche; and his brother Ora, of Long Beach, Calif., wave to him loving hands of affectionate farewell, awaiting with patience in renewed fellowship in the Father's House. All are united in a chorus of his praise saying, that whatever immortality there may be for him this at least was his, that he took the many qualities that were passed down to him, qualities doubly precious because of their very source, and passed them on molten and melted into a greater metal. It is a delight to state that those with whom he did business with most frequent, the Bowman Brothers of Victor, the Mercer Lumber and Grain Co. of Marengo, and the Ladora Lumber and Grain Co. of Ladora-those who would know him for what he was in business, and it is there one's qualities are revealed-unite in regretting his departing, and with others have not forgotten him in this most sacred hour.
