Read More	Vance Shephard, a man dedicated to succeeding in business for the welfare of his family, passed away on July 1, 2002, in Aurora, Oregon. Born on November 12, 1917, in St. Lawrence, South Dakota, to Claude and Vera (Thompson) Shephard, C. Vance Shephard spent his school years in Bremerton, graduating from Bremerton High in 1937. During the Great Depression he held a variety of jobs — raising animals for food, delivering newspapers, repairing houses, picking evergreens, and laboring generally. Following graduation he spent time in Alaska, then returned to an apprenticeship at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard where he worked as an outside machinist during World War II, became a member of the Machinists' Union, and joined the Masonic Lodge. In 1943 he married Racine Beyer. After an industrial accident, Vance retired from government service but continued his community and business involvement in Belfair. A longtime resident and eventual owner of Camp Gladwin on the North Shore, Vance grew oysters and developed his real estate in the area, naming one of the local roads after his daughter, Lorna Lee, who was born during this period. He was also elected president of the Haynes Oyster Company in Seattle. Vance was instrumental in the development of the Belfair community, working for the creation of the first medical clinic and the founding of the Community Baptist Church. As a school board member he was a driving force in the establishment of North Mason High School — at that time education for secondary students required a commute to South Kitsap. In 1962 the Shephard family moved to an Oregon ranch Vance had purchased, and after its development they moved on to the Portland area where they established Shephard's Azaleas and several travel agencies. Vance was most proud of the innovative methods imported from Holland for the mechanization of his greenhouse business, because they enabled him to expand the enterprise, with the help of his adult sons, to a high degree of efficiency and output. The Shephard greenhouses still provide the plants sold in many regional businesses, and the results of Vance's industry continue to beautify homes of area residents. Vance was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Randy; and his sister, Nadine Leaverton, but is survived by his wife Racine; children, Brad, Stan, Bryan and Lorna (Uptegrove); and grandchildren Amy and Kyle Uptegrove, all of Oregon. Vance's local relatives include a sister, Virginia Schultz; nieces, Susan Brown and Jan McManamna; nephew, Steven Schultz, and their family members. They will remember Vance as a man dedicated to hard work and achievement both in business and the community.
