Clementine was born April 11, 1910, near Holy Cross, Iowa, the daughter of Mathias and Mary Helena (Duehr) Theisen. She attended elementary school in Holy Cross and at the Nativity School in Dubuque. She then attended high school at St. Joseph's Academy in Dubuque. She married Arnold Haas at the Church of the Nativity in Dubuque on June 23, 1934. The couple farmed on an acreage near Asbury for several years. In 1945, they moved to a farm near Ryan, Iowa, where they lived until after Arnold's death in 1968. Clementine then moved to Monticello, where she worked for several years as a cook at the Heights Supper Club. Nicknamed "Toots" by her eldest half brother, the name stayed with her all her life. Toots was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a good neighbor and a good friend. A 4-H leader for many years, she never lost her love for children. She was a homemaker in the true sense of the word. A woman of many interests, she enjoyed sewing, baking, flower gardening, bingo, crossword puzzles, playing cards, quilting, crocheting and reading. She is survived by three daughters and their husbands, Marilyn (Loras) Lawrence of Monticello, Mary Ann (Robert) Gardner of Stilwell, Kan., and Maureen (Paul) Rauch of Central City; one son-in-law, William Welter of Central City; eight grandsons and families, Dan (Jane) Lawrence (daughters Molly, Danielle and Alanna) of Monticello, Jason (Lisa) Rauch (children Olivia and Cole) of Central City, Eric (Misty) Rauch (children Sarea, Tyler and Maura) of Central City, Nathan (Lynette) Rauch (children Tessla and Jaycie) of Tama, Michael (Susan) Gardner (son Robert) of Independence, Mo., James (Michelle) Gardner of Gardner, Kan., David (Patty) Welter (children Taylor and McKenna) of Central City, and Steve (Brenda) Welter of Central City; two granddaughters, Diane Lawrence (Richard Verschoore) of Milan, Ill., and Kathryn (Jason) Wilsey (children Elysee and Dominic) of Arvada, Colo.; and one grandson-in-law, Ron Hugh. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a daughter, Marge Welter; a granddaughter, Denise Hugh; four half brothers and sisters, John and Joe Theisen, Mary Duehr and Katherine Seyfert; two brothers, Alphonse and Matthew Theisen; and three sisters, Marge Byrne, Delphine Van Vleck and Monica Vorwald. --Cedar Rapids, IA Gazette ~ Sibling: Matthew N.
