Powell assisted in the service, and the Choir sang Abid With Me, Mercy, and Jesus Lover of My Soul. --------------------- Today we are in the Sanctuary of Sorrow through the officially reported death of Clifford Henry Petz who died in action with the United States Armed Forces against the enemies of his and our beloved country. The message from the War Department on March 9th reads as follows: Washington, D.C. Mar. 9, 1945. Mrs. Anna M. Petz, Nelson, Neb. The Secretary of War asks that I assure you of his deep sympathy in the loss of your son, Technician fourth grade Clifford H. Petz, who was previously reported missing in action, report now received states he was killed in action seventeen December in Luxemburg (sic). Confirming report follows: J.A. Ulio, the Adjutant General, Clifford Henry Petz was the son of Henry Petz and his wife Anna M. He was born June 18th, 1918, at Nelson, Nebraska, and died as a result of blows of the enemy directed at his country while he was at the front engaged in her defense. Thus the life in the flesh of this noble young man came to a close at the age of 26 years, 5 months and 29 days. We will not say that he is dead, but rather that he has been transplanted to the upper and better Kingdom, the Kingdom of God, and has joined his sainted father, who went to be with God there May 9, 1926. Of the immediate family the mother, Mrs. Anna M. Petz, and his brother, Earl are left. Many other relatives and riends (sic) share the great sorrow and loss felt by the mother and brother and also the faith that Clifford has gone to his eternal reward. At the age of eleven, December 29, 1929, Clifford united with the First Presbyterian Church of Nelson. He has always been a faithful and devoted member. At the time of his enlistment in the army (sic) he was the beloved teacher of a class of Junior boys in his Sunday School. He received his education in rural school and Nelson High School graduating from the latter in 1937. Clifford joined the Army March 11, 1942, and was inducted at Leavenworth, Kansas. He was in Camp Cooke, California, a year. From there he was sent to Camp Forrest, Tenn. He was in Tennessee Camp four months. Then he was at Pine Camp, N.Y. five months. After that he was at McCoy, Wisc. for a stretch, and then returned to Pine Camp. From Hew York he was sent to England and later was in Belgium, France, Germany and Luxemburg (sic). While in the United States, after enlistment, Clifford had two furloughs which the folks at home much enjoyed - the first November 28-December 11, 1942; the other November 10 to December 1, 1942. He ever maintained his fine Christian spirit. Upon his visits home and in his letters he always displayed a concern for those whom he loved and for others in general. His pastor especially remembers the sick call Clifford made upon him during his first furlough. Clifford was T-4 Technician Co. D 707 T.K. Bn at time of his death. (He was entitled to one more stripe than he has in the photograph which we have before us today.) It is our confidence that he fought a good fight; that he kept the faith; and has now received a crown of righteousness. It is with this faith we think of him now and in this faith we expect to die ourselves and be gathered to our fathers. Clifford Petz was the substantial kind of citizen that has made this country great. Had he lived to get back home we have every reason to believe that he would have continued one of our leading citizens, farmers, and churchmen.
