He was a WWII, US Army veteran and retired from American Tobacco Co. with 51 years service. Clifford was a member of First Baptist Church of Mayodan where he was a part of the church choir for over 40 years. Most recently he attended Madison United Methodist Church. Mr. Sands was also actively involved in the Mayodan Lions Club, Boy Scouts and the Genealogical Society of Rockingham and Stokes Counties. His hobbies were ham radio and genealogy. Clifford was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by wife, Gretchen Simpson VanHoy Sands; brother, William Thomas Sands; sisters, Ethel Mae S. Throckmorton, Gracie Louella S. Angel and Minnie Lee S. Evans and daughter-in-law, Devona Joyce Sands. Survivors include sons, Larry Van Sands and fiancée, Jean Elaine Freeman, of Greensboro and his children, Amber Marie Sands of Chicago, IL, and William Andrew "Will" Sands of Greensboro, and Keith Allison Sands of Greensboro and his children, Katie Allison Sands and Adam Joseph Sands both of Greensboro. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m., Friday, May 25, 2012, at Colonial Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Genealogical Collection at Madison Library, 140 Murphy Street, Madison, NC 27025; First Baptist Church of Mayodan, 101 South First Avenue, Mayodan, NC 27027 or Madison United Methodist Church, 110 West Academy Street, Madison, NC 27025.
