I was born on a farm 6 miles north of Downs when I was 6 years old my parents (Ira Walter & Mabel Charlotte {Asper} Headley) moved to my great grandfathers (Frederick H. Deck) 400 acre farm where I grew up and attended the Ice School for all of my grade school education. Due to my mothers health my father quit farming, sold the farm and moved to Downs and bought the Franzen Tire Vulcanizing Shop. When I graduated from the Downs High School in 1921 I joined my father in I. W. Headley & Son Downs Tire Shop. In the fall of 1921 I attended a school at Kansas State Agriculture College, Manhattan. It was the same as our Vo Tech school of today, it was set up for the purpose of traning WW I Veterans in Auto Mechanics and Electrical work. I specialized in Battery and Magneto Repair. It was a short course supposed to run one year, I finished the course and received my Diploma just after the first semester. On June 10, 1923, Ethel Kimble and I were married. All went well until the Great Depression and Dust Bowl Days, then one had to get out and do whatever one could find to make enough to feed a growing family. I got a chance to work in a Dry Cleaning Shop in Cawker City, Ks. during the day and take care of what battery and tire work we were getting at night. I also was a substitute mail carrier for Harry Richardson for some 25 years. To this union were born 6 children: Mrs June Lindblom, Salina, Ks; Mrs Juanita Wilcox, Hinsdale, Ill; Mrs. Ruth Harris, Overland Park, Ks; Howard Walter, Tonkawa, Ok; Marvin Dale, Blue Springs, Mo.; Glenn LeRoy, Salina, Ks. The Dry Cleaning Shop in Cawker City closed so I had a chance to buy the equipment. We closed out the Tire & Battery Shop and went into Dry Cleaning only in 1932, On January 21, 1961 we held an Open House for the new Coin Op Laundry & Dry Cleaning in connection with our Professional Dry Cleaning business. Clifford was interested in community politics and served as Mayor from 1953 to 1957, Past-master of the Downs Lodge No. 204 AF & AM and was an active member of the Downs Rotary Club for 36 years.
