Hartley, 81, died at 9:45 a.m. Thursday at Hillside Convalescence Center in Des Moines. He was born Sept. 18, 1910, in Mystic to James and Elfa Dickey Hartley. He married Edith Emma Potter on July 20, 1929, in Ottumwa. She died Feb. 15, 1985. He married Edith Emma Potter on July 20, 1929, in Ottumwa. She died Feb. 15, 1985. He is survived by three sons, Bill of Des Moines, Jack and John both of Ottumwa; a daughter, Marilyn Shepherd of Bakersfield, Calif.; 20 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Garrison of Davenport and Howard D. of Ottumwa; and five sisters, Zella Smith of Missouri, Blanche Moreford and Betty Harland both of Ottumwa, Margaret Ellen Buchholz of Idaho and Marge Long of California. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Gertrude Huff; a brother, George; an infant sister, Garnet; and a sister, Delores Holman. A graveside service will be 1 p.m. Monday at Shaul Cemetery, the Rev. Richard Quinlan officiating Visitation will begin at 1 p m. Sunday at Johnson Funeral Chapel.
