Hartley Sr., 88, of 314 Hamilton St., died at 8:28 a.m. Nov. 8, 2010, at the Ottumwa Regional Health Center. He was born April 17, 1922, in Rathbun to James William and Elfa Mae Dickey Hartley. He married Glendine Richardson Feb. 23, 1948. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Atlantic and the Philippines. He worked 33 years at John Morrell and Co. and later for P.S.I. until his retirement in 1984. He was a member of O.B. Nelson Post 3 American Legion and a life member of Walter B. Schafer Post 775 Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was in several country western and bluegrass bands. Surviving are his wife; three sons, Howard (Margaret) Hartley Jr. of Rochester, Minn., Jeff Hartley of Ottumwa, Brian (Cindy) Hartley of Rochester, Minn.; a daughter, Marsha (Bruce) Rowden of Theodosia, Mo.; three grandchildren, Chris (Alle) Hartley, Julie Olson and Alex Steven Hartley; two great-grandchildren, Tyler and Amanda Hartley; two sisters, Betty Harland of Eddyville and Margaret (Don) Buchholz of Blackfoot, Idaho; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, Steve Hartley; three brothers, George, Garrison and Clyde Hartley and a half brother, Frank Hartley; five sisters, Zella Smith, Deloris Holman, Blanche Morford, Marjorie Long and an infant sister, Garnett Hartley. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Friday at Reece Funeral Home with Rev. Gary Sneller officiating. Burial will be in Shaul Cemetery with military services conducted by O.B. Nelson Post 3 American Legion and Walter B. Schafer Post 775 Veterans of Foreign Wars. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home with the family present from 6-8 p.m. Thursday. Memorials may be made Hospice of Davis and Wapello Counties, 927 E. Pennsylvania Ave., Ottumwa, Iowa 52501.
