Westenburg, the son of Eldon Bernard and Elna Marie (Hartman) Westenburg was born at Griswold, IA on April 19, 1932. He graduated from Griswold High School with the Class of 1949. He entered the United States Air Force in 1950 and while serving in Germany, on April 4, 1954, he married Margarete Anna Koelling at Wiesbaden. Their marriage was blessed with daughters Peggy, Barbara, Janet and Ellen. Marlon became a Chief Master Sergeant in the Air Force and retired in 1981 after 31 years of service. He was a Vietnam Veteran and received a Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Clusters. Following his 1981 retirement from the Air Force, he worked for nine years in Germany before returning to Emerson. Marlon was serving his second term as Mayor of Emerson and was a Past Master of the Luftbruecke of Masonic Lodge and the Past Grand Master of the American-Canadian Grand Masonic Lodge. He was a member of the American Legion and the Emerson United Methodist Church. Marlon died July 16, 1996 at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, NE where he was being treated for injuries received in an auto accident near Emerson earlier in the day. Marlon was preceded in death by his parents and he is survived by his wife, Margarete; daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara and Robert Welch of Wylie, TX, Janet and Alan Grouse of Hastings, IA; daughters, Peggy Shirazi of Emerson and Ellen Westenburg of Minneapolis, MN; five grandchildren; sisters, Joyce Higgins of Griswold and Karen Kutnink of Irwin, IA; and a brother, Harlon Westenburg of Whitney, TX. Funeral services were held in the Emerson United Methodist Church on July 20, 1996 at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. Max Hall, Officiating; Frederick Larson, Eulogy and Don Martin, Eulogy. Burial was in the Emerson Cemetery. Pallbearers were the Masonic Brothers. Lloydene Steen was the organist and Pat Vestal was the soloist with the selection of "Breathe On Me The Breath Of God" and "The Spirit Song". Steve Colerick, Larry Hunt, Denny Westover and Bob Kutnink was the ushers while Adam Westover and Aaron Westover were in charge of the registry book. The Miliatary Rites were by the Offut Air Force Base Honor Guard and Masonic Rites were by the Humanity Masonic Lodge.
