Benjamin Sayre, father of Daniel and Henry Sayre, this city, died last Wednesday morning at the residence of the latter, of old age. Colonel Sayre only a few weeks ago came here from Muncie to follow the remains of his aged wife, Anna, to their last resting place. For several years he has been almost helpless, and it was noticed lately that he was growing weaker. On the morning of his death he lay on a lounge. His breath came quicker and quicker, and at last he sank away, and the spirit which for four score years and ten had inhabited the tenement of clay took its flight. His death was painless and quiet, and his friends could for a while hardly realize that he had gone the way of all the earth. Colonel Sayre was born in the year 1792 in the State of New Jersey. When two years old his parents took him to New york state and there he remained until 1826, when he came west as far as Miamisburg O. He remained at that point until 1834, when he went to Richmond, this State, and thence removed to Muncie. About the year 1841 he came to this county. At that period the site of Wabash was a dense forest traversed by Indians and wild animals. Col. Sayre at once identified himself with the interests of the locality and grew up with the town. In New York state he was a heavy contractor on public works, and after he took up his residence in Richmond he engaged in the construction of the National road, which the projectors intended making the great highway between the east and the west. Subsequent to his locating here the Wabash & Erie Canal scheme began to be talked about, and Col. Sayre from the start was a warm friend of the enterprise. He had a contract for building part of the old ditch which worked wonders in settling up this portion of the State. In all his business transactions Col. Sayre was the soul of honor, and no one could ever successfully assail his commercial integrity, and none spoke of him, but to praise him. In 1836 he joined the Masons and has been a prominent member of that fraternity ever since. He was buried yesterday afternoon with the honors of the order, a large concourse of friends and relatives following his body to the grave. ============================== Info provided by 4gr-granddaughter, Nov. 2010: Parents: Jedediah and Phoebe Babbitt Sayre.
