They were married in Roberdell, Richmond County NC. --------------------------------- Colonel Jack Flippen Cardwell, 70 of 219 Green Lake Road, Rockingham, died Wednesday, June 30, 1999, at Horton Medical Center in Middletown, New York. He was born April 16, 1929, in Forsyth County, NC, the son of the late Grace Leak[e] and Harden N. Cardwell. Colonel Cardwell was a member of the Green Lake United Methodist Church. He graduated from Ellerbe High School Class of 1947 and after World War II entered the U.S. Army and served as sergeant assigned to the Eighth Army Headquarters in occupied Japan. He worked a short time with CP&L and Western Electric before joining the Highway Patrol in 1951. Colonel Cardwell reported to the Institute of Government June 17, 1951, for six week basic school. Colonel Cardwell was assigned to St. Pauls, North Carolina, as a patrolman August 1, 1951. Later that year, he married Essie Dawkins and raised two sons. He held all ranks from Trooper to Colonel and was appointed Commander of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol by Gov. Jim Martin in 1985. He graduated from the Supervision of Police Personnel program at the University of Tennessee in 1965 and from the Police Administration program at Northwestern University in 1967. Colonel Cardwell attended the FBI National Academy for Law Enforcement in Quantico, VA, and was a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police. He was a member and a strong supporter of the National Rifle Association. Colonel Cardwell had a strong influence on shaping the North Carolina State Patrol, as we know it today. He retired as Commander of North Carolina State Highway Patrol in 1989. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, July 7, 1999, at 2 p.m. at Sierra Christian Center with the Rev. Eric Joyce officiating. Burial will follow at Green Lake United Methodist Church Cemetery. Surviving are his wife, two sons, three sisters, and one grandson. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 7-9 p.m. at Sierra Christian Center. Memorials may be made to Green Lake United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, 1329 Roberdel Road, Rockingham, NC 28379. Watson-King Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
