Jesse seems to have been quite the inventor, having applied for at least two patents. Follow is a somewhat confusing description of their use: •Patent No. 16,280 Jesse Ladd: Improved Machine for Pointing Shoe Pegs. Patented December 23, 1856. A block of suitable form being placed upon the vibrating bed, composed of fingers, and pressed down upon the ridges, it is pushed forward under the feed roller, which carries it forward to the cutting tool. This knife, driven by pitman of the driving wheel, cuts as it advances parallel angular grooves in the block, equidistant from each other, depending for that distance upon the ratchet wheel or stroke of a pawl, and the operation proceeds until the block has been completely gone over. The block is then replaced upon the bed, and again advanced to the feed roller, so that the knife shall cut another series of parallel angular grooves at right angles with the former, and guided straight forward by the ridges. •Patent No. 25,422. Jesse Ladd, of Holderness, N.H. - Improved Machine for Arranging Pegs. Patent dated September 13, 1859. The claim and engravings explain the nature of this invention. In his application for the patent he goes on to explain, in detail the process his machinery will arrange pegs that have been dumped into a hopper can sort out the good and bad pegs.
