Description	:	Boone County Rep 12 Nov 1890 Col. John Rose died at his farm in Marcy township, near the Rose ferry bridge, on Friday morning at the advanced age of 82 years. The deceased was one of the oldest settlers in Boone county and the state of Iowa, coming to this state in 1837 and to Boone county in 1849. John Rose died at his farm in Marcy township, near the Rose ferry bridge, on Friday morning at the advanced age of 82 years. The deceased was one of the oldest settlers in Boone county and the state of Iowa, coming to this state in 1837 and to Boone county in 1849. When he came to the Des Moines valley there were but few white men here and the country was a howling wilderness except the settlements along the Mississippi and Missouri rivers. Fifty miles from the rivers the state was the hunting ground of the red man. Col. Rose came from Ohio and took up a section of the land on which Des Moines now stands, the court house, post office, Savery hotel and most valuable portion of the city being on the ground. After a time he got the impression that the future metropolis and probably the capital of the state would be located nearer the center and further up the river. With this in view he sold out and came up 40 mines, taking up from the government his farm on the river bottom on which he resided until his death. The place he located at is an ideal location for a city. High enough up above the banks of the Des Moines river to be forever safe from high water, the ground is level and beautiful for over a mile west and for the same or even greater distance north and south. Above there is fall enough in the river for a good water power, while opposite the plateau on which the colonel located there was a good ford. No one could select a more desirable place for a town, but the advent of railroads changed the natural order and Col. Rose's place remained and ever will remain farming property. In the early day Col. Rose was a prominent democratic politician and a power in the county. It is many years since he took an active part in politics, living in retirement. He was, however, a staunch democrat, voting that ticket on the Tuesday before his death and rejoiced at the democratic victory.
