Cheney, for many years being recognized as one of the wheel horses of the Republican party and who was called by it to many stations of honor, including membership in both branches of the legislature and in the governor's council, and who now, at the age of 82, is spending the sunset of his life at the Cheney homestead in Ashland. The father of Assistant Clerk Cheney, Jonathan M. Cheney, has also performed yeoman service for his party, and has served in both the house of representatives and the state senate. Thomas Cheney 2d, was born in Ashland, was educated in the public schools of the town of Holderness and Worcester academies, and is now in his second year as a student at the Boston University Law school. He is keeping. >The Ashland Citizen, April 10, 1915. The news item to the right referring to the new gravestone appeared on page 9 of the Plymouth Record August 4, 1894. Col. Thomas P. Cheney, Ashland's widest known and one of her most respected citizens, observed his 80th birthday anniversary at the Cheney residence on Highland Street, Monday. Col. Cheney received congratulations from all over the country and abroad, and was visited at his home during the day by many of his townspeople. He expressed great pleasure for the many remembrances. Col. Cheney has done more for the town of Ashland than any other one and no man ever living in this place has been wider known throughout the country. He was born in Holderness (now Ashland), February 24, 1883, and is the son of Person and Annie W. Cheney. He was educated in the schools of Ashland and at the Tilton Conference Seminary at Tilton. At the age of ten years he entered the woolen mill's employ, and for a year and a half picked black wool for $1.25 a week, the hours of work extending from 5 o'clock in the morning until 8 o'clock in the evening and out of this munificent sum he boarded himself. He then went into the paper mill for $1.50 a week until he was sixteen years of age, when he became clerk in the country store of Col. Jesse Ladd, and assistant postmaster, and later clerk for his brother. After he had saved a little money he attended the Seminary at Tilton paying his own way and supporting himself. At the age of twenty-one he married Miss Mary Elizabeth Keyes, daughter of Jonathan F. Keyes. He then moved to Amesbury, Massachusetts, and was in the dry goods business two years, until 1857, when he returned home and clerked for his father-in-law, and was assistant postmaster. At a later period he went into business on his own account in a small way, and also acted as the first telegraph operator at Ashland, and was deputy sheriff in 1859-60-61. In 1861 he enlisted in Co. A, 6th Regt., N.H. Vol. Inf. and having been appointed by the Governor as enlisting officer, he gathered together the first soldiers of the company, and served in the capacity of first lieutenant; after the enlistment was complete he went to Keene and there joined a company in which he received the appointment of second lieutenant, was advanced to the first lieutenancy in the may following. Col. Cheney served until November 1863, when he was taken sick, removed to the hospital and discharged therefrom for disability. Prior to enlisting in the service and going to the front, he was appointed by President Lincoln postmaster of Holderness and during his absence his wife took charge of the office. In 1864 he was appointed Deputy Sergeant-at-Arms at Washington during the session of Congress in 1864-69, and in 1868 was one of the eight delegates to the national convention who nominated Gen. U.S. Grant for the presidency. On July 1, 1869, under President Grant's administration, he was appointed superintendent of the railway mail service of New England states, and served fifteen years and thirty days, making his head quarters in Boston. He severed his connection with the railway mail service to accept an appointment August 1, 1884, by President Arthur as pension agent and continued in that branch of the service until 1886, when he was removed by President Cleveland. In 1886, with others, he built the Ashland Knitting mills, one of the foremost industries of the town and has served as one of the directors. Early in life he served as town clerk, and later in 1865-66 he represented it in the State Legislature, and again in 1887-88; in 1889-90 he served in the senate. He was appointed again under Harrison as pension agent, and served four years. In 1894 he was elected a colonel on the staff of the Governor's Council. Seven children have been born to Col. Cheney, five of whom are now living: Dr. J.M. Cheney of this place, Dr. Harry Cheney of Campton, Mrs. Ora. A. Brown and Mrs. Annie Kahler of this place and Mrs. Maude Gilman of Portland, Oregon. Col. Cheney is a charter member of O.W. Keys Post No. 35, G.A.R. He is the only living charter member of Mt. Prospect Lodge No 69, A.F. & A.M.; and a member of the Pemigewasset Chapter, and was made a Knight Templar in Washington, D.C.; is a member of Mt. Holyoke Commandery in Concord, and was the first Master of Squam Lake Grange of Ashland. >The Ashland Citizen, March 1, 1913, p2.
