For over thirty-eight years the people of Campton and surrounding towns have been familiar with the services of Dr. Harry A. Cheney, resident physician of Campton. For well over fifty years the house in which he and Mrs. Cheney make their home in Campton Village has been the residence of a physician, and faithfully and tenderly has Dr. Cheney attended those who have come under his care. Recently he had the experience of bringing the third generation of one family into the world, all members of which he was the attending physician, and all residents of Campton. Dr. Harry Applebee Cheney was born on Christian Hill in Ashland, November 20, 1870, one of eight children and the son of Colonel Thomas P. and Mary E. (Keyes) Cheney. With his brothers and sisters he attended Ashland grade school and after completing his term there, he went to New Hampton Literary Institute but did not graduate. He started to attend Tilton School, but after about three weeks or so injured his knee so badly that it was necessary for home to return home to Ashland. After some time he was sufficiently healed he went to work for the Ashland Knitting Company, in the hosiery mill, of which his father was part owner. The young lad showed himself to be naturally industrious, and starting as a chore boy he was gradually promoted step by step until after three years he concluded his services as Superintendent of the Finishing Department. As a boy in his teens he now had definite ideas as to what he wished to make his life's work. Accordingly he left for Burlington, Vermont to enter the University of Vermont to take the medical course. He worked faithfully and diligently, graduating in good standing July 16, 1894. He practiced medicine in the Boston Emergency Hospital for several months, later going to Burlington for about the same length of time. In May 1895 he purchased the house and practice of Dr. William R. Garland in Campton. Here he established a practice that has steadily grown and his patients have the utmost confidence in his ability and integrity as a well read physician. Besides having a large practice, Dr. Cheney is active in town affairs. He has always been a staunch Republican and was elected Representative to the General Court from Campton in the term of 1911-12, an office which he has filled efficiently and to the best of his knowledge. He was the first man elected to the legislature from Campton under the new primary law. He is a member of Mt. Prospect Lodge No. 69 of Ashland and of Pemigewasset Lodge, No 91, I.O.O.F., of Campton. Active in his profession and always keeping abreast of the latest developments, Dr. Cheney is a member of the New Hampshire State Medical Society. He is also an attendant of the Campton Baptist Church. On the same day that Dr. Cheney received his medical degree at the University of Vermont, he was married to Miss Sarah Addie Brooks of Ashland. They are the parents of one son, Sterle A born November 2, 1896, who is married to Dorothea Hubbard, daughter of Rev. and Mrs. Winifred Hubbard. They have two fine sons, Sidney and Harry, both very fond of their grandparents. Dr. Cheney can well remember the days when automobiles were not in existence, and during the springtime when grippe was prevalent his three horses were not too many to use in a day to make his rounds. Today in his automobile he could cover in half a day or less. He attributes much of his success today to his automobile. Of Dr. Cheney's seven brothers and sisters, only three sisters are living at the present time, Mrs. Irving Chase of Lakeport, Mrs. Ora Brown of Ashland and Mrs. Albion Kahler of Ashland. He has also several nieces and nephews, all of whom enjoy coming to visit at the Cheney's. Dr. and Mrs. Cheney have a delightful home in Campton Village and a summer residence at Mad River which is familiarly known as Miriamichi. They take great delight in their flower gardens which are two of the most attractive in this section. The Ashland Citizen, October 7, 1933, p1. Final Rites Held for Campton Physician. Dr. Harry Applebee Cheney, who passed away at the Sceva Spear Memorial Hospital in Plymouth on Sunday, July 13th, was born on Christian Hill in Ashland, November 20th, 1870. Of the eight children who composed the family of Colonel Thomas P. and Mary E. (Keyes) Cheney, only two survive Dr Cheney. These are his oldest sister, Mrs. Irving H. Chase of Nelscott, Oregon and his youngest sister, Mrs. Albion Kahler of Ashland. Dr. Cheney's grade school education was acquired in Ashland. For a time he attended New Hampton Literary Institute and also Tilton School. Then follow a period during which he worked for the Ashland Knitting Company; beginning as a chore boy and concluding as Superintendent of the Finishing Department. At the end of the three years spent in this way he entered the University of Vermont at Burlington to study for the profession which he followed for over 50 years. Two important events occurred in his life during the summer of 1894; he received his medical degree and married Sarah A Brooks of Ashland, who died on April 23, 1945. In 1895 Dr. Cheney purchased the home and practice of Dr William R. Garland, his predecessor in Campton Village. His only son, Sterle Armstrong Cheney, was born in Campton on November 2, 1896. He and his wife have lived with and cared for Dr. Cheney since the death of the doctor's wife. Dr. Cheney served the community in many ways aside from attending their bodily ills. He represented the town in the State Legislature session for 1911-1912; was a member of Pemigewasset Lodge No. 91, I.O.O.F., and held office in the Village Precinct. He was also a member of the Masonic Order, Mt Prospect Lodge, No. 29, of Ashland. He was presented a fifty year member's medal from the organization in 1942. Any worthwhile project received his hearty support. Although he never joined any religious group he attended services and contributed regularly to the Campton Baptist Church, of which his son's family are all members. He belonged to New Hampshire State Medical Society and Belknap County Medical Society. Up to the time that his health began to fail in 1944, he was a member if the Associated Medical Center of Plymouth, and even after he gave up active practice he was still retained as an honorary member of the Staff of Sceva Speare Memorial Hospital. As a diversion he particularly enjoyed writing poems which were often referred to as making up worses. These appeared from time to time in the Plymouth Record over the signature Paul Raddock, His Mark. His poems "Mad River" appeared in the "Anthology of New Hampshire Poetry" which was published in 1938. It is always with regret that we note the passing of any public spirited citizen, but we must all realize that Death comes as a friend when it brings release from long-continued ill-health. July 16, the day that he reached his final earthly resting place is the date that also marked his college graduation and marriage in 1894 and Golden Anniversary in 1944, which was the last wedding anniversary before his wife's death. His son Sterle, survives him; also two grandchildren, Sidney Lawrence Cheney of Campton and Harry Winfield Cheney S/1c, stationed at the Naval Air Station in Norfolk, Virginia, and two sisters, Mrs. Irving H. Chase of Nelscott, Oregon, and Mrs. Albion Kahler of Ashland. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon, July 16, at the Campton Baptist Church, with Reverend Samuel Lowe officiating. The church was filled with many of his friends and there was a profusion of flowers. Burial was at Green Grove Cemetery in Ashland in the family lot. Bearers were Irving Brown, Bertram Pulsifer, Charles Ouelette, Webb Little, Shirley Tracy and Frank Fogg. The Ashland Citizen, July 17, 1947.
