Of Spokane, WA passed away February 11, 2009 at the age of 92. He was a kind and compassionate man who loved his family and his country. Mel was born September 7, 1916 in Palmyra, Iowa to Oliver R. and Minnie M. (Bruce) Butterfield. Farm life was difficult but Mel prided himself on his resourcefulness and his ability to work hard with good cheer. His family relocated to Boise, Idaho just prior to the market crash in 1929. Upon graduation from Boise High School, and then Link's Business school, Mel enrolled at the University of Idaho, where he majored in animal husbandry, agricultural economics and speech. He also joined the Army ROTC there, and was called up to active duty in August of 1940. The 30 years of active and reserve military duty Mel fulfilled began in earnest on September 23, 1942, in the North African Theatre, where he piloted a B-25 through fifty missions over the Mediterranean Sea and Rome, earning him a Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal with oak leaf clusters. Upon returning to the Inland Empire, Mel eventually started a life insurance business, and prided himself on his excellent personal service. His military service continued as an ROTC flight instructor during the Korean Campaign, held successive assignments at Fairchild AFB, including Vice-Wing Commander, served in the Civil Air Service, and was a qualified first pilot in numerous aircraft. Mel was active in many civic and community organizations in Spokane, including the Mason's Lodge (accepted into the Shrine in 1948), the Spokane Chamber of Commerce, the Elks, and the Sons of the American Revolution. He also had a deep and abiding love for the game of golf. Family life was very important to Mel especially when it came to birthdays and holidays. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife Patricia, and survived by his four children John Butterfield, Catherine (Gary) Ryen, George (Betsy) Butterfield and Wayne (Ruth) Butterfield, as well as 10 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. Viewing and visitation will be held Monday, February 16th from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm at Heritage Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, February 17, 2009 at 1:00 pm at Heritage Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow at Riverside Memorial Park with full military honors.
