Description	:	Connel Reid Walls, age 89, a resident of Oliver Springs, passed away Tuesday, March 20, 2012, at Methodist Medical Center in Oak Ridge. Mr. Walls was born March 28, 1922, in Coalfield, TN. During his childhood he lived for a number of years in Harlan County, Ky., in the community of Chevrolet, which was a coal mining community owned by General Motors. Read More	Connel Reid Walls, age 89, a resident of Oliver Springs, passed away Tuesday, March 20, 2012, at Methodist Medical Center in Oak Ridge. Mr. Walls was born March 28, 1922, in Coalfield, TN. During his childhood he lived for a number of years in Harlan County, Ky., in the community of Chevrolet, which was a coal mining community owned by General Motors. His father was the general mining superintendent at Chevrolet Coal Company. The Walls family later moved back to Tennessee, and settled in Petros, where his father continued his vocation. The family later established Charles Walls and Sons Coal Company, which was a successful coal company, operating on Windrock Mountain. Mr. Walls continued to operate a coal mining business with his family, and later independently, before retiring in the mid-1970's. Mr. Walls expressed a desire to thank any surviving former employees of Power Equipment Company of Knoxville, for their contribution to the success of his business. Mr. Walls was a faithful Christian, and a member of First Baptist Church, Oliver Springs, where he served on several mission trips to Africa, which he found especially meaningful. He was devoted to family and friends and was consistently generous to those less fortunate. Reid served his country in the United States Army, during WWII, where he received several ribbons, citations, medals, and accommodations. He was preceded in death by his parents: Charles T. Walls and Grace Butler Walls; by a sister, Nova Lee Mendell and by a brother Maurice Walls. He is survived by his wife, Irene Adkisson Walls; by a son, Mark Walls of Clinton; by daughters: Rema Metcalf of Kingston, TN and Carolyn Walls of Knoxville, TN; by grandchildren: Heather Ellis and Holly Wilkins of Kingston, TN, and by a great grandson, Ryan Wilkins of Kingston, TN. The family will receive friends Thursday, March 22, 2012, between the hours of 6:00 and 8:00 p.m. at Sharp Funeral Home. Burial and graveside services with full military honors, will be held Friday, March 23, 2012, at 11:00 a.m., at Anderson Memorial Gardens. Additionally, special gratitude goes to Dr. Terrence Meece, MD and his staff at Secret City Family Practice, along with Methodist Medical Center for their excellent care. Memorial gifts may be made to the First Baptist Church, Oliver Springs, TN, Veterans Administration, or any charity of your choice. Sharp Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
